“Every point, every match, feels heavier when pain is your constant companion,” Nick Kyrgios said over two weeks ago after losing his first-round Australian Open singles match. Coming back after recovering from a wrist injury, the former World No. 13 was expected to make a strong impression down under. However, his injury woes resurfaced to haunt him in Melbourne, leaving the Canberran dejected. After his singles campaign ended, he was also out of the doubles category in the first round, along with partner Thanasi Kokkinakis, due to a strained abdominal muscle. But now there’s a ray of hope.
Sharing a huge update on his injury for the first time since he withdrew from the doubles in Melbourne, Kyrgios shared an Instagram story on Thursday. The 2022 Australian Open doubles champion confirmed he would return to the court soon. But it won’t be before the Indian Wells event in March. He wrote, “To my fans! Appreciate all the support – I will be back home training with my next event being Indian Wells ”
Adding the reason for a delayed comeback, Kyrgios mentioned, “I was battling through a 4cm abdominal tear/strain at the Australian Open. I will be doing everything I can to rehab and prepare for the next events.” Per the Aussie, the abdominal tear got worse in the Major down under, affecting his performance. With this latest update, Kyrgios also confirmed that he won’t be able to represent Australia in the Davis Cup tie against Sweden, starting this Saturday.
Last year, too, Kyrgios couldn’t play Davis Cup matches due to a serious wrist injury. He remained out of action almost for the whole season. Now suffering from a strained abdominal tear, the Aussie is aiming for another return. Of course, it won’t be easy, considering how his campaign went down under. Does he feel like continuing in the future, given how frequently he’s getting injured?
Nick Kyrgios reveals plans for 2025 season amid injury woes
After losing his first-round tie against Englishman Jacob Fernley 6-7, 3-6, 6-7 at the Australian Open, Nick Kyrgios was devastated. Had it not been for the injury, he could have managed a better performance. Later in the post-match press conference, he couldn’t hide his emotions. Drawing clouds over his future participation at the Melbourne Major, he said, “Realistically, I can’t really see myself playing singles match here again.”
Continuing further, he added, “When you’re competing for the biggest tournaments in the world and you’re struggling to win sets, physically, it’s pretty tough. It’s just not enjoyable for me.”
However, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist is hopeful about this season, especially when it comes to his appearance at the All-England Club in July. He said, “I’ll play the Grand Slams, I’ve got my protected ranking. Obviously, Wimbledon is a big one for me. I still feel like obviously, if I don’t have an abdominal strain, I feel when I sustained that five days before a Grand Slam, it’s not ideal. Hopefully, if my body’s feeling good, I’ll be able to make some noise at Wimbledon.”
