Does Philly still consider Dallas Goedert one of their top offensive options? If yes, then why has there been a delay in his contract extension? Goedert’s four-year contract with Philly, signed on November 19, 2021, expires after this year. And Philly fans have been begging the team to offer him a new deal, but the Eagles seem to be ignoring those cries. So, what’s been stopping them from offering an extension to their TE?
And that’s where the whispers started picking up. Listening to what Howie Roseman and Nick Sirianni had to say at the NFL owners’ meetings didn’t exactly ease concerns, either. Truth be told, from their statements at the NFL annual meeting, a few analysts are convinced that Jalen Hurts’s key player is ‘already gone.‘
When asked for an update on Goedert’s contract situation, GM Howie Roseman didn’t offer much clarity. “There’s no update,” he said. “Dallas has been a tremendous player and person for us… The opportunities that we got into free agency with Harrison Bryant and [Kylen] Granson were just opportunities we felt were good for our football team. I know certainly that Dallas is a unique player. So really, that’s kind of where we’re standing.” Now, from this response, you cannot make up anything except the growing sense of uncertainty surrounding the TE’s future with the team.
Coach Nick Sirianni echoed similar sentiments when he was asked about Dallas’s contract situation. “Right now, he’s on our football team, and obviously, Dallas Goedert has meant a lot to us.” Honestly, that’s quite a diplomatic way of dodging the real question. Sirianni went on to praise the 30-year-old, saying that the team wants to keep as many players as they can.
“We’ll see how that plays out. He’s a heck of a football player, heck of a leader. Want to be able to bring back as many guys as you can. But that is not the reality of the NFL. We’ll see what happens and how that happens, but of course, you want everyone back.” His 42 catches and 2 touchdowns in 10 games were plausible. However, his injury in week 13 might be a concern for the Eagles or might it be his age?
Well, NBC Sports columnist Reuben Frank feels there is one way that the two sides could work out a deal.
Dallas Goedert’s contract: Is he ready to take a pay cut?
Over the past four seasons, Dallas Goedert has suffered quite a lot of injuries. But the TE has bounced back each time. Now, the Eagles‘ concern could be that he has hit the 30-mark. And when you hit that age, the struggles of staying healthy through a full season increase. In the 2024 season as well, the 30-year-old suffered a hamstring injury, which caused him to miss three games.
Also, Philly has to pay $15.5 million to Goedert this year as part of his $57 million extension in 2021. So, there are money issues as well. In this situation, what both parties could do is make a pay cut on Dallas’s contract. The TE knows his market value might not be exactly through the roof, so maybe taking a pay cut and staying with his team could be the best move.
Philly has made some big moves in recent years, like signing Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, Saquon Barkley, and Zack Baun. Interestingly, the team also has to extend contracts for some of their younger players, like Cam Jurgens. So amidst all these major moves, it’s tough to say what’s next for Goedert.
The 30-year-old has been a major part of Philly’s success, but the team has still managed to win games without him. So, chances are, if a pay cut might not be on the horizon. The Eagles could potentially part ways with the TE if they can find a trade partner for him.
