The Browns are caught in a mess. Their QB Deshaun Watson isn’t expected to come back anytime soon after a second surgery to repair a re-ruptured right Achilles tendon in January this year. But the money trap is also huge, with $92 million remaining on his contract. HC Kevin Stefanski is fed up of playing with an under-prepared team. The coming draft gives them the option to change their destiny. After finishing with a dismal 3-14 record in 2024, they pick 2nd this year. But the real question is, who will they choose?
ESPN’s Adam Schefter spilled the beans on a March 20 episode of ESPN’s Get Up show. He talked about the two prime options, Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, and said, “When you talk to people around the league, the sense is that Cleveland would like Cam Ward. But I think Cam Ward is going to be the number one pick. Unless Cleveland trades up to one, I don’t think it’s going to get Cam Ward.”
The issue is that the Browns don’t want someone who might become larger than the team. It happened with Deshaun Watson as well. They were forced to sign a big deal with the signal caller, which has not paid dividends.
Schefter also talked about the possible team for the Colorado Buffaloes QB and added, “I think Cleveland goes either Abdullah Carter or Travis Hunter and if they go for one of those guys, then that leaves Shedeur Sanders sitting there at number three for the New York Giants.”
Cam Ward is a solid choice for the Browns. He impressed everyone with his performance in the Miami system, scoring 158 touchdowns. That’s a prodigious feat. But it looks like it might not happen. But the Giants might miss out on their preferred choice too. If the Titans don’t pick Ward first overall, Cleveland might snap him up before New York gets to choose. It’s an interesting puzzle that makes the Draft must-watch TV!
