NFL Rumor: Kevin Stefanski To Lose MVP QB to $7.3B NFL Franchise As Shedeur Sanders Picks AFC North Rivals

6 min read

Kevin Stefanski’s margin for error has never been narrower. With the Browns’ financial future tied to a quarterback still fighting for on-field credibility, the front office has begun to quietly reassess the architecture beneath Deshaun Watson. Behind closed doors, there’s been a shift. Not a pivot away from Watson, but a subtle effort to build structural insurance. Multiple second-round quarterback prospects have been vetted with a precision that suggests more than due diligence. One name in particular has emerged as a potential inflection point. Not just for Cleveland’s depth chart but also for Stefanski’s own long-term viability in a division where quarterback clarity is non-negotiable.

While Cleveland’s public commitment to Deshaun Watson remains firm, the reality inside Berea is more pragmatic. Watson carries the highest cap hit in NFL history at $63.9 million and remains both a physical and schematic unknown. After two injury-limited seasons and stretches of uneven play, the Browns are looking to insulate themselves with a younger, development-friendly quarterback who fits Kevin Stefanski’s system—and could step in long-term if needed.

Enter Tyler Shough.

The 6-foot-5 journeyman, who played for Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville, checks many of the boxes Cleveland covets. He’s experienced, battle-tested, and efficient in the intermediate passing game, a critical trait in a Stefanski offense that prioritizes timing, boot action, and rhythm throws. In 2024, Shough threw for 3,195 yards and 23 touchdowns and ranked top-10 nationally in adjusted completion rate, per Pro Football Focus.

But, this Wednesday, Adam Schefter dropped some news on his X account that might not be great for Kevin Stefanski. He said, “Louisville QB Tyler Shough visited the Browns on Monday and is visiting the Giants today. He is also scheduled to visit next week with the Raiders and Seahawks; other previous visits include the Steelers, Jets, and Colts.”

You see, Cleveland hosted him this week on a top-30 visit, joining a list of suitors that includes Seattle, Las Vegas, and the New York Giants—the latter valued at $7.3 billion, making them one of the league’s most financially aggressive franchises and a legitimate contender to draft a developmental quarterback early.

For the Browns to land Shough without trading up, he would have to slide deep into Day 2, which is increasingly unlikely given his recent rise. Shough also carries an injury history that may scare off some franchises, but to others, his experience—nearly 1,000 collegiate attempts across three Power Five systems—is a major asset in a class filled with one-year wonders.

The Browns’ interest in Shough signals that they are not viewing Watson as a guaranteed solution beyond 2025. But that scenario only works if the quarterback market remains static. It no longer is.
