Who will be the Titans’ No. 1 pick and the first overall pick? Is it Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders? That’s the question keeping Tennessee fans up at night and draft nerds glued to their screens. The Titans need a quarterback; no question about it. But with every passing day, the noise around their first overall pick just keeps getting louder. Honestly, this off-season feels more exciting than anything they did during that 3-14 mess of a 2024 season. This is redemption time. But the big question is, with whom under center?
An NFL insider just dropped some eye-opening bits on where things stand inside the Titans’ war room. What he said might just shift how we look at Tennessee’s draft board. On Sunday’s episode of SportsCenter, Jeremy Fowler broke down the potential top three picks. Talking about the Titans using their first pick, Fowler clarifies that despite everything positive on Cam Ward, the team has not made a final decision yet on who they will take at No. 1.
Fowler mentioned the other non-QB options the Titans might consider, like Penn State’s Abdul Carter and Colorado’s Travis Hunter. “They know players like pass rusher Abdul Carter, Travis Hunter out of Colorado are those possibly generational-type players. That term ‘generational’ you throw around. So they’ve been looking around.” As for Shedeur Sanders, Tennessee canceled their private workout session with him.
Fowler said that “tells a lot about how they feel from a quarterback perspective and how the rest of the league feels.” As per the ESPN reporter, the consensus seems to be in favor of Cam Ward. And after him, there’s a clear drop-off before you get to the next tier of QBs (including Shedeur). Before that, Jeremy also confirmed that the Miami QB is on the team’s radar. His name is not just being tossed around by the media -they genuinely like him.
It’s not just because of Ward’s arm strength, moveability, and durability. Of course, that is the major factor, but also because “They feel like he’s a good person. In their interviews with him, their private workouts with him, their exchanges with him have been good. So everything is positive.” Fingers crossed.
That’s a direct contrast to some of the anonymous chatter around Shedeur Sanders, like the claim from a coach who called him “brash and arrogant.” So, where does that leave Sanders in all of this?
Is Shedeur Sanders slipping down the Titans’ board?
On April 9, Colorado Buffaloes’ QB Shedeur Sanders and his teammate Travis Hunter were scheduled to have a private workout session with the Tennessee Titans. But that changed after the Titans met with Sanders’s camp following Colorado’s pro day on Friday. As reported by Titans senior writer Jim Wyatt on Saturday, both sides mutually agreed to cancel the workout.
Titans GM Mike Borgonzi spoke after Sanders’s pro day and made it clear that the team will make its decision based on what they’ve already seen. “Shedeur threw the ball well, and we got to see him out there with Travis,” Borgonzi said. “It was good to see Shedeur go through the whole workout and the two-minute drill after. It just confirms a lot of stuff you saw on tape. He can drive the deep ball; you saw that here today. So, it was a really good workout.” But was it good enough to be the first overall pick?
Now, we can’t say the Titans have completely ruled out the Colorado star just because they canceled his private session. But it might suggest they’ve seen enough, or know what they needed to know, to move forward with someone else. And that someone else could very well be Cam Ward, who’s currently the projected No. 1 pick in most mock drafts.
Interestingly, the Titans’ next move remains a mystery. And we’ll all be watching closely when that big moment arrives on draft night.
