Did you know that the Athletics are without a home, despite the fact that they will be playing their home games at the Sutter Health Park in Sacramento?
Well, it may sound a little bold, but that’s true. Ever since the Athletics left Oakland after playing 57 seasons, they are now playing their home games in Sacramento. The Las Vegas stadium, which is expected to be finished in three or possibly four more years, is the cause of this. Now what comes as a surprise is when an MLB insider made some surprising revelations about the current issues surrounding Sacramento.
As per MLB insider Susan Slusser, the stadium in Sacramento is mainly built for the minor league and not for any major league events. She even dropped a major update on the Sacramento A’s, predicting a chance of them going back to Oakland if the problems continue. So what are the issues?
Susan Slusser, the senior baseball beat reporter of the San Francisco Chronicle, takes us down to why the MLB might carry out an investigation if the Athletics go back to Oakland with the new mayor in charge. Calling Sacramento suitable for the minor league, she said, “They made some nice improvements, but you know, and yeah, they are trying about what they wore in Oakland, maybe a little bit more. But the attendance is down from that first game against the Cubs.” The minor-league ballpark has a capacity of just 14,014, which is way less.

Slusser went on to voice her worries about the stadium’s high temperature and the fact that nobody seemed to care. She further said, “You know, it’s nice for what it is. They have done as well as they can, but visiting players are like, ‘Why are we playing at a minor-league stadium? Like, why aren’t they in Oakland?” That certainly raises a lot of questions – even some complicated ones, right?
The Athletics have moved four times before, so this is nothing new for them. It started in Philadelphia, and after that they moved in 1901, followed by their transfer to Kansas City in 1955, Oakland in 1968 and even though it’s temporary finally, Sacramento. Susan Slusser disclosed that there might be a way for the Athletics to return to Oakland after Barbara Lee was elected as the city’s new mayor. A new mayor – a new leadership – can breathe life into the ballpark negotiations. Perhaps even express optimism about building a solid rapport with Rob Manfred and Fisher, as this could result in the Athletics moving back to Oakland under the new management.
Remember that Slusser’s proposal is only intended for the short term. Once the Las Vegas stadium gets completed, the Athletics will get that as their permanent home. Meanwhile, the Athletics have drawn themselves into a little bit of controversy when they are called by different names since their coming to Sacramento.
The Athletics get trolled amid the stadium woes
Amid the concerns that MLB insider Susan Slusser brought to light relating to the Sacramento stadium, the Athletics face another heartbreak. An announcer for the Texas Rangers referred to the Athletics as “homeless” during their game against them. Although it may sound a little embarrassing, Dave Raymond, the announcer, did not mean for his humorous jab to offend anyone. It was rather an attempt to inject some lightheartedness amid the problems surrounding the Athletics.
The projected time for the completion of the Las Vegas stadium is 2028. Thus, the Athletics have to consider the Sutter Health Park as their home stadium till then. Due to the temporary arrangements made, with the Athletics not preferring to be called the Sacramento or Oakland Athletics, the “homeless” word was just spelt as a funny take at them.
Technically, the Sacramento stadium will still be the home of the Athletics whenever they play their opponents, even though they do not wish to claim it as such. More significantly, given the circumstances they are currently facing, they might even have to hear a lot more statements in the future. Nevertheless, their performance has not suffered in spite of the present issues; they are still performing admirably. After losing Tuesday’s opener against the Rangers, the Athletics secured a comprehensive victory by 5-2 against the Rangers on Wednesday.
It appears that after moving from Oakland to Sacramento, their fortunes have turned around. However, do you think that the Athletics do have a chance to get back to Oakland and play there until the Las Vegas stadium is completed? Let us know in the comments.
