New Yorkers Lose Faith in Rangers as NHL Playoffs at Major Risk

4 min read

It’s no secret that the New York Rangers have had a difficult season, with just 35 wins out of 67 games. However, just yesterday, they managed to not only beat the San Jose Sharks but also beat them with an impressive 6-1 margin! Artemi Panarin and Adam Fox both netted two goals; Jonny Brodzinsky and Vincent Trocheck also found the back of the net for New York and Jonathan Quick made 21 saves! This significant change in luck for the Rangers has pushed some fans into a new wave of optimism, with renewed dreams about the Rangers playoff chances.

However, could they be forgetting that it was just a few weeks ago that Rangers’ coach Peter Laviolette addressed the losing streak, saying, “Yeah, I mean, the hard part is we’re letting games go by and we’re not putting points in the column?” Or, could they be holding on to the optimism he shared at the latter part of his statement, when he said, “We’ve got to turn the page, go out on the ice today, get ready for tomorrow, ’cause it’ll be here before you know it. We got to win a hockey game?”

The latest frenzy on Reddit gives us an insight into how the public views the New York Rangers Stanley Cup chances. When a Rangers account shared the statement, “We beat up san jose we are now closer to playoffs just gotta win the next 6 games,” on the platform, the comments came flooding in.

Fan Reactions as New York Rangers bag first win in a while

Some die-hard fans showed optimism, writing, “looking at the schedule a 6 win streak (5 more after sharks win) is so doable, it’s hard to believe though.” With the next few New York Rangers games being against the Wild, Devils, Lightning, and Flyers, who are all performing at a fairly similar level, this fan may be on to something, but that is if the Rangers can bring it, like they did last night, for the next six games! Which not too many others are hopeful about.

“This team hasn’t won 3 in a row since November, not exactly a walk in the park.” One Reddit user wrote, harking back to their last big winning streak, which was against the Canucks, the Kraken, and once again, the Sharks!

Other fans seemed personally attacked by the Rangers’ subpar performance this season, writing, “God help me, I know I sound like a shitty fan, but I don’t even want to watch these assholes in the playoffs. They don’t deserve it.” We don’t have to delve too much into this one; the passion and letdown behind the words are clear.

“Respectfully, I think I’m done with wishful thinking. I left it back in January.” Another fan wrote, reminiscing about the dwindling end of the Rangers leg of hope this season. January looked okay for the team, with 8 wins and 6 losses, but they were still not powering through.

And another fan went all in to state what many realists might call the ‘obvious.’  “I am not into sports betting but is there anywhere I could bet against the Rangers making the playoffs? I’m all-in,” they wrote, which, based on the stats, is perhaps not the worst idea.

So, there you have it; yes, the New York Rangers managed to pull on the ‘hope’ strings of some fans with their recent 6-1 win against the Sharks, but others are still working on their trust issues after a season of disappointments, and only time will be able to tell where they all land.
