Kyle Palmieri threw his hands up in joy after deflecting Alexander Romanov’s long-range shot into the goal. Yet the moment the New York Islanders forward spun around, he saw an official waving it off. The Situation Room reviews the video only to uphold the ref’s decision: “Palmieri impaired Merzlikins’ ability to play his position in the crease prior to the goal,” said the league.
Coming just 9 seconds from the final buzzer of regulation, the gold would’ve been the highlight of the match had it been allowed. Unfortunately, the disallowed goal ultimately led to goalless overtime and the Islanders fumbling in the shootout. In light of this playoff dream-crushing disaster, X user Rob Taub revealed an even more depressing insight.
Taub compiled the data from the similarly game-changing, yet disallowed goals, that the New York Rangers had to deal with in the last month. Unfortunately, the New York Islanders have found themselves on the receiving end of such rulings, not once or twice, but four times in the last month. “The #Isles since Feb. 23,” wrote the Taub before listing the disallowed goals, including their most recent one.
The first one he listed was eerily similar to the one against the Columbus Blue Jackets incident. Jean-Gabriel Pageau beat Stars’ goalie Jake Oettinger to tie the game 4-4 in the closing minutes, only for the goal to be disallowed. Just as Palmieri’s goal didn’t count, the officials ruled that Pierre Engvall had impaired Jake Oettinger.
The #Isles since Feb. 23:
-Game-tying goal overturned against DAL
-Game-tying goal overturned in LA
-Goal overturned to make it a 1-goal game in LA (same period)
-Game-winning goal overturned vs CBJ
— Rob Taub (@RTaub_) March 25, 2025
The next one on the list was even worse because, in their March 12 clash against the LA Kings, the Islanders had two match-tying goals disallowed in the same period. If you think this trend developed in the last month, you’d be wrong. That’s because it happened in January against the Ottawa Senators as well. Yet despite so many examples, somehow the most recent one may have hurt the New York Islanders the most.
The New York Islanders were livid as their playoff chances dwindled
While the losses from the disallowed goals collectively chipped away at the team’s standings, the loss against CBJ hit the hardest. That’s because the Islanders would have leapfrogged their New York rivals the Rangers with a win against the Blue Jackets. 75 points would’ve put them ahead of the Rangers in the battle for the wildcard spot and well ahead of the Blue Jackets.
Unfortunately, they now sit right beside the Rangers, tied at 74 points, while the Blue Jackets finally snapped their six-game loss streak to sit just 1 point behind the Islanders with 73. Naturally, tempers and frustration flared among the Islanders squad against the disallowed goal. Coach Patrick Roy had some harsh words for the NHL‘s Toronto Situation Room for disallowing the goal.
“If Toronto is afraid to overturn calls made by their referee, we don’t need Toronto,” the coach said after the match. The players were equally livid at watching their playoff chances slip away. Kyle Palmieri didn’t hold back during his locker room interview afterward. “I think it was a f***ing embarrassing,” said the ice hockey star, clearly disappointed at what went down.
Even Bo Horvat said it as he was it. “It’s obviously a game-winning goal late in the hockey game. And to me, it’s just unacceptable,” added the New York Islanders captain. Yet, what do you think about the disallowed goal? Do you believe the Islands can still make the playoffs? Tell us in the comments.
