In his 36 Majors starts, Justin Thomas has won only two: the 2017 and 2022 PGA Championships. Aside from those victories, he has experienced plenty of ups and downs. His best majors finish include the 2020 Masters (4) and T8 at the 2022 Masters, the 2019 Open Championship (T11), and the 2020 U.S. Open (T8). It seems to weigh heavily on the golfer. So, what did he say? Reflecting on his second majors win, which came after a five-year drought, in an exclusive interview, Thomas said, “For sure, it definitely was. I still feel like I should have more than two majors.”
Additionally, in his 36 major starts, he has had only 8 top-10s. But that’s just his performance in the majors. Thomas has also struggled at TPC Sawgrass, where he has made seven appearances but secured only one victory. However, this burden is not his to carry alone.
Recently, Golf on CBS hosts expressed similar feelings. One said, “He has pretty much played horrible in the majors and the PLAYERS in the last couple of years, but he’s kind of just been hanging around. And he has played well.” Another one chimed in, naming Thomas as her number three pick, saying, “I know Hadwin edged him out yesterday, but the guy is trending. Tying the course record at The PLAYERS. I mean, do it for Molly, Justin. You know he’s a new father. I think he’s gonna do really, really well at Augusta.”
There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s start with his daughter, Molly. Two years after their marriage, Thomas and his wife, Jillian Wisniewski, welcomed their first child, Molly, in November 2024. Additionally, at the Valspar Championship, his caddie had “Molly’s dad” written on his bib instead of his name! There’s plenty of love between this father and daughter.
Will his love for Molly translate into his first major win in three years? That remains to be seen. For instance, Thomas will make his 10th Masters start this year, a place where he achieved top-25 finishes in six of his nine starts. However, when discussing The PLAYERS, it’s important to mention the course record he set there. He became the first player since Tom Hoge in 2023 to register 11 birdies in a single round! However, this isn’t the first time the golf world has urged Justin Thomas to improve. Here’s another conversation.
The latest discussion around Justin Thomas’ performance on the greens
And where does this conversation really start? It revolves around both his 2024 performance and his statement that “I still fully believe that I can have a year like Scottie just had.” Keep in mind that the golfer hasn’t clinched a win since his 2022 PGA Championship victory. Additionally, out of 20 appearances in 2024, he only made it to the top 10 six times. How about this year, you ask? Well, it’s pretty much the same as last year.
He seemed to finish strongly with a 63 on The Sentry. However, it wasn’t enough, and he ended up tied for 26th. Looking at his performance, Rex Hoggard said, “He just looked sloppy from the beginning, that one concerned me a little bit. It seems to me that he would have shown up with a little bit more form but there is no alarm bells for either one right now.” In addition to Thomas, he was also talking about Xander Schauffele, who is also struggling with his bad form. But The Sentry wasn’t his only bad finish; he followed it with a T48 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
Other than Justin Thomas’s performances at API (T36) and The PLAYERS Championship (T33), Justin Thomas seems plenty strong. He finished at 2 twice; firstly, at The American Express and secondly at the Valspar Championship. But is it enough to impress the golf world? No. The Masters is coming up, and with it, he will be fighting alongside a tough roster. And that’s why it wasn’t surprising when the No Laying Up Podcast talked about his other close loss at Valspar.“J.T.’s got to be good enough to not throw a couple of Bogies, like, he just got to be a little bit better.” Thomas lost to Hovland with just one stroke difference, a result of plenty of birdies in his final rounds.
Looking at this, do you think this conversation will take charge of his 2025 season—or will it be himself? Let us know your thoughts!
