NBA Fans Seeking Answers as Wilt Chamberlain & Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Iconic Footage Is Revisited

6 min read

“Wilt had a lot of bad habits. I was able to take advantage of them,” said Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once. The history of the NBA is composed of intense rivalries, ranging from the legendary Larry Bird vs Magic Johnson feud to LeBron James vs Stephen Curry’s modern competitiveness. Before any of them, however, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ruled the court. As Basketball Network reporter Adel Ahmad highlighted, “Chamberlain was power; Abdul Jabbar was precision.” As Kareem said, he was able to find the chink in Wilt’s armor from time to time. However, Wilt couldn’t keep that rivalry maintained if he didn’t pull out major moves against the player. Fans were recently reminded of that.

The official X account of ‘Hoop Central’ recently put out a post. It featured a throwback clip of when Wilt Chamberlain blocked Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s Skyhook shot 2x in a row. Described as amongst the deadliest and lethal shots in NBA history, the Skyhook was created by the NBA’s Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer George Mikan, but Kareem popularized it. He perfected the art of releasing the ball with a high, arcing hook shot while shielding it from defenders. Never before had a player managed to block Kareem’s famed Skyhooks twice in a row before Wilt did, and no one ever did even after that. Therefore, that moment in itself became an important part of the 2x NBA champion’s legacy.

The discussion of who was better between Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar continues to remain prominent even today. After all, the competition between their respective teams remained equal, with Wilt’s team winning 14 of the 27 games. Wilt reportedly had 122 50-point games, while Kareem had 10. At the same time, Kareem outscored Wilt 201-70 in their five regular-season games in the 1972 season. Amid such intense rivalry, you needed to do things that put you over the top of the other player. Wilt blocking two skyhooks in a row was among those moments.

Having seen this highlight, netizens wanted more. Well, actually, they wanted only one highlight in particular.

NBA fans demand to see footage of Wilt Chamberlain’s record-setting performance: “where the 100 point game”

One social media user did not choose to marvel at how Wilt Chamberlain blocked Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s skyhook shots. Instead, he asked, “Mannnn where the 100 point game lol”. Wilt Chamberlain set many records in the 21 years he spent as a professional player. However, none of them would top the fact that, even today, the late NBA star is the only player to score 100 points in a single game! This feat was recorded in the NBA books back in March 1962, during a game between the Philadelphia Warriors and the New York Knicks.

Unfortunately for hard-core NBA fans, the game was not televised. To date, no video footage of the matchup has been managed to be found. The only thing that exists are audio recordings of the game’s fourth quarter, which was added for preservation in the United States’ National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress back in 2016. Netizens would know the details of the absence of video footage. However, that still didn’t stop them from making their demands.

One individual wrote, “They have every wilt highlight except his 100 point game ”. Yes, well, the NBA was not recognized as a major sports league back in 1962. The league even struggled to compete against college basketball in terms of ratings. Attendance at the game used to be approximately half of capacity. Therefore, no one can blame the league for missing out on the chance to capture one of the most iconic moments in basketball history.

One social media user wrote, “BUT WE CAN’T POST A THROWBACK VIDEO OF WILT SCORING 100?” Well, the netizens will just have to take the word of the reports and the people who saw the feat with their own eyes. Johnny Kerr of the Syracuse Nationals once said, “How about this: He’s the world’s worst free-throw shooter and he’s 28 out of 32!”

It was only earlier in that season when Wilt broke the NBA single-game scoring record (71) with 78 points. It didn’t take long for him to break that record by shooting 36-63 (57.1%) field goals, and 28-32 (87.5%) free throws. Given the high level of this score, it would be hard not to take someone’s word about it, but they should still try.

Another individual wrote, “Where is the 100 point game clip never happened”. Well, it is not as if there isn’t any proof of the 100-point feat. After all, the partial recording of the game’s radio broadcast, which covered just the fourth quarter, also includes the moment Wilt Chamberlain dropped in his 100th point. Play-by-play man Bill Campbell could even be heard shouting that “He made it! He made it! …One hundred points for the Big Dipper!”

There is also the iconic photograph of Wilt sitting in a locker room chair and holding a handwritten sign reading “100”. Therefore, the absence of video footage is frustrating, but saying it never happened is a stretch.

One social media user wrote, “At this point, kobe has the record for most points in a game”. The late Kobe Bryant made history back in January 2006 by recording a whopping 81 points! Unlike Wilt Chamberlain’s game, this one contains footage that one can easily access on YouTube. In a way, Wilt Chamberlain is like George Mallory, aka the mountaineer who was believed to have climbed Everest back in 1924, 29 years before Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed it. However, since he died on the mountain, and his camera was never recovered, it is hard to know whether he made it to the ‘top of the world’ or not.

Overall, the majority of reactions highlighted nothing but a demand for Wilt Chamberlain’s most important highlight. While that isn’t available, Wilt created enough basketball history for everyone to cherish. Not being able to get a glimpse of one of them won’t change things.
