“I think the Carolina Tar Heels should consider firing Bill Belichick… I’m worried that Bill Belichick just isn’t fit to coach college kids, and UNC should consider cutting ties with him.” Less than six months into his first-ever college football stint, Bill Belichick has started getting the ‘firing’ verdict. The above statement might look like an exaggeration, as uttered by the former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson. But if recent reports by an insider are to be believed, then the future of the head coach might be hanging by a thread. The fuel? It has his 24-year-old girlfriend at the center, but what about the expectation of on-field performance? Well, that, too, may be looking challenging now.
Ever since that CBS Sunday Morning interview happened, life at UNC for Bill Belichick hasn’t been easy. People accused Jordon Hudson, Belichick’s girlfriend, of ‘taking control’ of the interview. As for the optics? Even CBS came out the next day with a statement claiming that Hudson disrupted the interview multiple times and even “stormed off” at one point. All of this, including recent reports of Belichick urging staff members to include Hudson in UNC’s communications, added fuel to an already ruinous fire.
The head coach, who came after accepting a $50 million contract, is facing severe media scrutiny and public outcry over Jordan’s alleged actions. But how does all of this concern his on-field performance? Sure, Belichick has done relatively well since arriving at Chapel Hill. He took over a recruitment class that was near the bottom and improved it to 44th place. The head coach, with his charm and aura, added 21 players. But despite all of the hype and the recent moves, a tough reality awaits Belichick.
Dan Wetzel, the senior ESPN sports writer, spoke about the troubles that Belichick may wade himself into in the 2025 season. “This is all going to be about how well they do. Do they win? Can you get to 10 wins? Or can he get a program that usually wins eight to ten? Can he get into the playoffs? Can he generate?… So this entire experience is going to be really out of left field. And again, this is North Carolina; it doesn’t rock the boat. This is not a program that steps out, right?” Well, rumblings at UNC against Bill Belichick don’t help his case either.

According to several reports, including ON3’s, the mood at UNC is becoming less favorable for the former Patriots legend. As per ON3’s report, a close source said that the Hudson situation was “growing sense this could become a problem.” Sure, Belichick is bringing a new mindset with his pro-ball philosophy and recruiting that could work in the NIL world.
But if the insider’s verdict is to be believed, then patience surely runs thin in UNC’s camp. But if the head coach can produce results on the field and take UNC, a “dormant giant,” to its former glory? Well, the same people who are criticizing him will post stories with ‘GOAT’ written on them.
UNC set to get $1 million trouble from Belichick?
Yesterday, Pablo Torre reported that Bill Belichick’s girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, got banned from the UNC campus. But less than an hour after Torre’s report, UNC came out with a statement denying Torre’s story and rejecting everything Torre said and conveyed, “She is welcome to the Carolina football facilities.” However, despite that, this whole controversy might be brewing fresh discontent for Belichick.
As per several reports, Bill Belichick’s buyout will drop to $1 million from $10 million starting from June 1st. And guess what? The buyout could potentially mean one of the parties choosing to exit if need be. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported, “Initially, that reduction was viewed as a quick and easy path for Belichick to get back to the NFL. Now, it becomes Belichick’s potential escape hatch from what may have become a bad relationship.”
All in all, it looks like problems could be in the bag for UNC, too, if Belichick opts out due to strains in his relationship with UNC. Mind you, this could happen too since $1 million would be nothing for Belichick if he decides that ‘enough is enough.’ Moreover, UNC could part ways too if the controversy surrounding Jordon Hudson or, later, the on-field results do not take shape as they would want.
