Pete Alonso has been one of the hottest topics this offseason. The New York Mets and Alonso have been in talks since mid-2024. Despite all the twists and turns, it appears Alonso’s preference is to stick with the Mets. Here, an MLB insider spills the beans on when the signing might finally be announced. Fans are definitely on the edge of their seats.
Rumors are there that Pete Alonso will be signing a three-year deal with the Mets. And MLB insider, Boomer Esiason believes so too. His X post from January 31 read, “I’m feeling like Pete is a Met tomorrow.” According to Esiason, Pete Alonso can be signed and revealed as a New York Met from February 1. Not just that! He also had something to share with both the dealers at the table.
Boomer Esiason came on the WFAN YouTube channel and had a message for the Mets, Pete Alonso, and Scott Boras. “What everybody just has to do is everybody’s just gotta calm down. You know, Pete’s not playing in Toronto, he’s not playing in Cincinnati, he’s not going to the Giants, he’s not going to Chicago, he needs to be the first baseman of the Mets. He knows that, the Mets know that. And Boras, just clam up, you gave him bad information or you gave him bad advice, this is one of many that you’ve given bad advice to. And I would tell Pete, do what’s in your heart and follow what your heart says you should do,” said the insider.

It was basically a chill-out message for everyone because as per him Alonso is a Met and both sides know it. Boomer did not hesitate to point out that Boras had given bad advice to Pete and many others over the years. So, his word for Polar Bear was straightforward: make decisions based on what feels right. Clearly, Boomer wants this scene to pan out with peace and in the Mets’ favor.
Now, it all boils down to Pete Alonso and the Mets. Pete has a heart of gold for the Mets, but would the team reciprocate that love? Will they take a step forward and offer him a deal worthy of his performance? It’s February already! Guess, the cloud will clear very soon.
Big swings & bold moves: Mets gear up for a huge MLB year
The New York Mets are gearing up for a fantastic 2025 season. The most talked-about is the signing of star outfielder Juan Soto to a jaw-dropping 15-year, $765 million deal. Fans are hoping that he’ll supercharge the offense of the team. But their first baseman Pete Alonso drama continues with rough contract talks and owner Steve Cohen calling the negotiations “exhausting.” If Alonso leaves, the Mets will need to figure out a strong replacement, whether that’s Mark Vientos stepping up or bringing in someone new. Either way, it’s going to be an interesting season to watch.
The Mets have been making bold moves with their pitching staff, too. They re-signed Sean Manaea and took Frankie Montas to the rotation. On top of that, Clay Holmes, with a three-year $38 million deal, will be switching from reliever to starter. According to Holmes, he is confident about the transition as he has worked on his pitching skills during the off-season. Under pitching coach Jeremy Hefner, the team development has been tremendous, with Manaea and Luis Severino showing great improvement. Their success in reaching the NLCS has definitely taken the Mets to a top spot where pitchers can step up their game.
As the MLB spring training draws closer, multiple questions need to be answered concerning infield depth and pitching. Manager Carlos Mendoza will be keenly checking on first and third base positions while monitoring prospects like Brett Baty and Luisangel Acuña. How the team handles these spots could really set the tone for this season.
But all eyes are still fixated on the whole Alonso-Mets fiasco. Do you think the beginning of February would bring some good news?
