The Miami Dolphins are trying to reinforce discipline in their squad. With a pivotal season ahead, Mike McDaniel and the franchise are addressing key roster concerns this offseason to avoid last year’s failure in securing a playoff berth. But are they ready? Especially when the organization is dealing with a couple of key members who might call off their respective NFL careers?
We all know that veteran Calais Campbell has played 17 seasons in the NFL, including a year with the Miami Dolphins. In addition, Terron Armstead too is nearing his retirement days, having played 11 seasons in the league. And now, at present, the two might be calling it quits this time, leaving a big hole in Mike McDaniel’s Dolphins. So, what’s the present situation in Florida’s locker room?
On Monday, Mike McDaniel, via FinsXtra on X, revealed the team’s thoughts on Armstead’s situation. He expressed, “It’s important for me to operate as though he is unavailable to us… he’s earned this opportunity to figure out what he wants to do with his life.” In addition, for Campbell’s future status, McDaniel expressed, “He’s assessing multiple options as a player in the 45th year of his career… he was a very important player to the team last year.”

No doubt, Calais Campbell is a certified good dude. He is a six-time Pro Bowler and the 2019 Walter Payton Man of the Year. Last year, after signing with the Phins in June, he played in all 17 regular-season games, recording 52 tackles (35 solo), including 5.0 sacks, five pass defenses and one forced fumble. During his time in 2024, the Dolphins’s defense has been a game changer. This is also evident in the fact that Campbell and the team have held opponents to around 18.1 points per game. So, that kind of dominance has fueled the team’s turnaround.
On the other hand, five-times Pro Bowler Mike McDaniel’s another key asset, Terron Armstead, played 15 games last season. His high performance could easily be judged via the record he made last year by ranking third overall among offensive tackles. This 33-year-old is a beast when he’s on the field, but staying there has been his biggest challenge. He’s battled injuries his entire career and has yet to play a full season. Now, the real question is does he want to push his body for another year? And for the Dolphins, do they take a leap with rookie Patrick Paul at left tackle, or roll the dice on Armstead staying healthy? Of course, big decisions are ahead regarding both the veteran players.
On one hand, the team is awaiting the decisions related to Calais Campbell and Terron Armstead. On the other hand, Mike McDaniel revealed the ongoing situation and decision related to their fastest WR, Tyreek Hill.
What Mike McDaniel said about Tyreek Hill?
The 2024 season ended with a speculation that whether Tyreek Hill will return donning Miami’s jersey the next year or not! It seems now that speculation has ended, at least for now. Tyreek Hill’s uncertain future with the Dolphins started after Miami’s brutal season-ending loss when he dropped a bombshell. “I’m out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day I gotta do what’s best for my career because I’m too much of a competitor to be just out there.” However, later he tried to walk it back, but now his actions are telling a different story.
In the past 24 hours, his social media has been stirring the pot. He responded with a grin emoji when a fan suggested a trade. Then came the peace signs on a post calling him the biggest draft-night trade candidate. Coincidence? Maybe. But it sure doesn’t feel like it. So, what about Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, who isn’t sweating it?
At the NFL owners’s meetings, Mike McDaniel made it clear – Miami is moving forward with Hill in 2025. He trusts that if Hill had something to say, he’d say it to him directly. Now that’s a valid point. But what about those social media antics? Well, it seems Tyreek is just being Tyreek. That’s what McDaniel thinks about it, as he said, “Tyreek’s known for whatever antics on social media.” Hence, it means the wide receiver isn’t likely going anywhere leaving the Phins. Even it doesn’t matter if he is frustrated with the franchise’s failure to secure a playoff berth. Or it doesn’t matter whatever he says on social media about the team or the Chiefs and in a press conference.
What matters is – Tyreek Hill hasn’t talked to Mike McDaniel regarding his trade. And that’s what the HC and the entire organization is considering. After all, since landing in Miami, Cheetah has led the NFL with 4,468 receiving yards. But we can’t forget his last season! It wasn’t his best as he covered just 959 yards (the lowest since 2019) for six touchdowns, again a career low.
