Miami Open 2025: Taylor Fritz vs Lorenzo Sonego; Preview, Head-to-Head, and Prediction

4 min read

Taylor Fritz had a stellar 2024 season, reaching the finals of the US Open and the ATP Finals last year. The World No. 4 carried that incredible form to 2025 as well, powering Team USA to their second consecutive United Cup triumph. However, after that, his performance graph dropped quite significantly. He’ll now be entering the Miami Open on the back of his fourth-round exit from the Indian Wells. The American will start his campaign against Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the R64 and he’s looking forward to putting up a good show on the “faster” courts. Can he have a winning start?

Taylor Fritz vs Lorenzo Sonego: Preview

Fritz set the bar high for himself in the latter phase of the 2024 season. But, currently, he is currently nowhere near that form. His best performance so far this season has been reaching the QF at the Delray Beach Open. His previous match was against Jack Draper in the Indan Wells which resulted in a 5-7,4-6 defeat.

His opponent Lorenzo Sonego, on the flip side, has been quite impressive this season. He reached the QF of the AO but was defeated by America’s Ben Shelton in a four-set thriller. The 23-year-old also reached the QF of the Open 13. He will enter the contest against Fritz following his impressive 7-5,7-5 win against Argentina’s Mariano Navone in the first round of the Miami Open.

Fritz vs Sonego: Head-to-Head

Taylor Fritz has crossed paths with Lorenzo Sonego seven times in his career. If we take a look at their overall head-to-head record, the American currently leads Sonego by a 5-2 margin.

2023 ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati R32: Fritz 6-4,7-6(1).
2021 ATP Masters 1000 Paris R64: Fritz 3-6,6-2,6-3.

2018 Wimbledon R128: Fritz 3-6,6-3,6-2,6-2.
2018 London Queen’s Club 1st Round Qualifying: Fritz 6-2,3-6,6-1.

Prediction: Fritz to win this match in three sets

Lorenzo Sonego’s only two victories against Taylor Fritz have come on the clay courts. Fritz has got the edge against the Italian on all the other surfaces. Although the American has been struggling a bit this season, he is a real threat on the hardcourts.

Fritz’s best performance in the Miami Open came in 2023 when he reached the QF. Lorenzo Sonego, meanwhile, has failed to progress further than the fourth round in Miami. If we take a look at their numbers this season, Fritz (4) has a win-loss record of 10-5 in 2025, whereas, it’s just 8-7 for Sonego (38) at the moment.

Lorenzo Sonego is known for his versatile playing style. He is equally good from the baseline as well as at the net. Additionally, his incredible fighting spirit and his ability to bring in a lot of variations in his game make him a real threat on the Tour. His groundstrokes are flatter than most of the other players. With his venomous forehand and impeccable serve, he may cause a few troubles for Fritz in this match. But is it enough to topple the Americans? Well, seems very unlikely!

Taylor Fritz is an offensive baseliner known for his powerful groundstrokes, particularly his forehand and a strong serve, with a unique, grip. The World No. 4 also has the ability to hit sharp angles cross-court on both sides. He has a strong backhand and even his court coverage ability is truly exceptional.

Fritz has already hit 155 aces this season. Can his aces help him get the better of someone like Sonego? Well, this match might go a little deeper, but Fritz should win in three sets and advance.
