The Mets have hit more than a rough patch; they’ve skidded to a 6–14 record over their last 20 games. That’s not just a stumble; it’s a warning sign for a team with postseason dreams. Even with a three-game win streak offering a flicker of hope, the lineup issues can’t be ignored. And now, with pressure mounting, help might be on the way, not from the dugout, but from Double-A Binghamton.
The Mets’ farm system has produced its share of gems. And now, top prospect Jett Williams is making serious noise in the minors. The organization selected him as the No. 14 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft. Ever since then, he’s grown steadily through the system. The 21-year-old Williams even earned the title of Eastern League Player of the Week earlier in June.
With every passing game, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Williams is doing everything the Mets could ask of him at Double-A. And now, amid a breakout, his major league arrival may finally be taking shape.
“But coming back in 2025, he just looks like the guy that was the number one prospect in the Mets system,” pointed out Joe DeMayo, co-host of The Mets Pod, on New York 4 to 7 while discussing Williams. “If you go back to May 1st, Jett is hitting .290 with a .908 OPS, 22 extra-base hits, 19 stolen bases, almost as many walks as strikeouts. So really, Jett is just back to being Jett. And he has the chance to be a dynamic up-the-middle player. He’s played shortstop, second base, and center field at the Double-A level. And he’s a guy I envision in the future hitting at or near the top of the order,” DeMayo added.
And, he’s not wrong.
Williams is slashing it in the minors, making it hard for anyone to look away. True to his first name, he’s also an efficient base runner, with 24 stolen bases and 65 strikeouts in 71 games so far this season. His power-hitting and impressive speed makes him stand out for a 5-foot-6 player.
And here’s the most striking part: He’s doing all this after missing most of the 2024 season due to wrist surgery, which dimmed his prospect status. Before the injury, in just 11 games, he was slashing .179/.360/.308 for Double-A Binghamton. Then the surgery happened in June 2024, which postponed his MLB debut.
But now, a September call-up might not completely be off the table, given his recent form. “He’s knocking on the door of Triple-A, maybe sooner than later. But look, I think Jett is part of this team’s future, whether that’s at second base or center field,” DeMayo had said just weeks ago while discussing the possibility of Williams joining the roster in September on The Mets Pod.
And since then, his chances have only improved. In 72 games, he’s slashing .278/.391/.467. And the Mets, who are struggling to find balance in their lineup, could definitely use Williams.
Mets receive advice on their young core
Sure, the Mets are slowly heating up at the plate again after their rough stretch. But is it time for the concerns to take a back seat? Well, unfortunately, that is not the case. Most troubling, alongside their bullpen woes, is the state of their infield and outfield, which don’t look particularly promising. So, as the Mets try to raise the ceiling of their bench for a postseason push, words of advice from The Athletic should serve as a wake-up call.
“New York’s lineup simply has not been as deep as expected, due to regression by Mark Vientos at third base and Francisco Alvarez at catcher… there’s room to add another infielder and perhaps a center fielder,” The Athletic‘s recently published MLB Trade Deadline Urgency Index read. That speaks volumes, especially considering how disappointing Vientos and Alvarez have been so far this season.
Vientos entered this season with high expectations. Quite natural! Because last season, he added 27 homers to his stat sheet. But guess how many home runs he scored this season? Only 6 from a total of 58 games he played. Yes, he had to sit out for a while due to an injury. But even before moving to IL in June, the state was no different.
As for Alvarez, injuries have derailed his form, too. He has been demoted to Triple-A after his OPS dropped as low as .652. While Luis Torrens and Hayden Senger have stepped up, it hasn’t been enough to answer the team’s growing inconsistencies.
With the trade deadline just weeks away, the Mets will have to make a decision, and fast, to patch any cracks that could hinder their postseason dreams.
