Folks, keep your eyes on Davis Thompson! Why? This 25-year-old star is certainly one of the golfers who has got everyone talking. The winner of the Tiger Invitational for his third collegiate win, the young golfer is currently teeing off at the Texas Children’s Houston Open. And guess where he is at? Yes, T1! Ahead of star-studded golfers like Jake Knapp, Rory McIlroy, and Jason Day. Undoubtedly, he is doing it well right now. But behind every good golfer is a massive support system, and that seems to be the case with Davis Thompson.
You can also credit his father’s involvement with golf for Davis Thompson’s game. Yes, you read that right! Like Davis Thompson, his father, Todd Thompson, also wanted to be a golfer. And Davis Thompson’s mother? Well, while it is true that we don’t know much about Leigh Thompson, we know that Thompson’s mother has been the best mother to the young golfer! On that note, let’s take a quick look at the man behind Davis Thompson’s games!
Todd Thompson was a member of the Georgia Men’s golf team from 1985 to 1988, serving as its captain in 1987 and 1988. Sr. Thompson is currently the Executive Director of the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour, based in Auburn. In addition to what we have already seen, Todd Thompson has been the tournament director for the RSM Classic since 2017. In case you don’t know, it’s the annual PGA Tour stop at St. Simon’s. Of course, being a fan of golf himself, Sr. Thompson wanted to guide his son into the sport. However, he held back.
In an interview from 2021, Todd Thompson shared a glimpse of the relief he felt when his son chose to go to Georgia. Talking about it, Sr. Thompson said, “I remember when he told me he was going to Georgia. I was very excited. I wanted him to go somewhere where he’d be able to develop relationships and get better. And he’s done both of those things at UGA.”
And, to the relief of his father, he did achieve a lot there. Davis Thompson was also chosen as the SEC Player of the Year. He was named the First Team by the league’s coaches! Of course, Todd is proud of his son. And what charms him most about his son? “His demeanor. His preparation.” Even more importantly, Todd Thompson caddied for his son in the U.S. Open in 2020! We may not know much about Davis Thompson’s mother, however, he never shies away from mentioning her. In fact, the young golfer celebrated Mother’s Day by posting an Instagram picture with her parents and captioning it: “Happy Mother’s Day Mom. Thank you for putting up with me and always keeping the pantry loaded. You the real MVP.” In addition to his parents, we know a little about his sister. Frannie, his sister, married two years before Davis Thompson tied the knot with his beau, Holly Grace Robinson, in 2023. A look back in time and Davis Thompson’s 2025 season
The young golfer was a member of the Lee Scott Academy golf team. Additionally, he helped them win 6 consecutive state championships from 2012 to 2017! He also captured individual state titles in 2013 and 2015. Following that, he attended the University of Georgia to pursue a degree in sports management. While there, he earned All-American First Team honors in 2020 and 2021 and was named the 2021 SEC Player of the Year. Additionally, he led his university to a fourth-place finish in the SEC Championship. Besides those, he received medalist honors at the 2019 Western Amateur, which earned him the George R. Thorne Trophy. Sounds cool? Well, his current season is pretty moderate. So, how did he start with the PGA Tour?
He turned professional in 2021 and won the 2022 Rex Hospital Open on the Korn Ferry Tour. His PGA Tour card came after he finished 16th on the Korn Ferry Tour’s Money List. What about his 2025 season? Davis Thompson began his season with The Sentry and made a finish of T36. After that, he missed the cut three times, including at The Arnold Palmer Invitational. However, despite his missed cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii, he got a little better at The Genesis Invitational and made a solid finish of T13. After that, you ask? Well, it was T10 at the ‘fifth major,’ The PLAYERS Championship.
