The world continues to mourn the untimely demise of the two NHL brothers, Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau. It’s been seven months since we lost the two gems to a tragic accident. What remains now is their family honoring their legacy, and sharing the never-before-seen moments on their social media. Earlier, Johnny’s wife, Meredith, shared how things used to be for her and Johnny, including their favorite pastime, during a conversation with Julie & Cat.
The remembrances are to be cherished, and their devoted wives have performed noble services after their passing. Speaking of noble, we knew the brothers not just for their excellent skills on the ice but also for their kindness to the people, the underprivileged precisely. And now, their wives have made a special announcement, essaying a foundation by the brothers’ name: The John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation.
The foundation’s initiative is to help expand the ice hockey opportunities and also cater to the families who are affected by drunk driving, just like them. On August 29, a drunk driver had struck and killed the two brothers while they were riding their bicycles on the roadway in Salem Country. The brothers were all set to be groomsmen at their sister’s wedding, which was scheduled for the next day. But fate took a rather tragic turn.
At the time of their demise, both the wives were pregnant. Madeline gave birth to her first child with Matthew a few month’s later, while Meredith’s third child with Johnny is due for April of his year. One cannot even begin to imagine what they are going through but they continue to remind the world of how amazing their husbands were.
As co-presidents of the foundation now, they stated, “Your support will promote and expand youth ice hockey opportunities, help hockey families facing tragedies, as well as help families that are unfortunately also affected by drunk driving, like ours.” They have also urged the fans and other community members to contribute to this noble cause.
As the foundation has gone live, the official page of the foundation has dropped a heartwarming post on Instagram announcing its status. Soon after, Matthew Gaudreau’s wife, Madeline, reshared the post on her Instagram story, showering love for the foundation and the brothers. She said, “all for you guys.” Madeline and Meredith have constantly showcased their love for their husbands on social media, and we see how they continue to live with their memories, cherishing the love that they had.
Madeline’s emotional adieu to her late husband got us all welled up
Last year, when the agony sprawled over the Gaudreau family, Madeline shared an emotional bid-adieu note to her late husband, Matthew. Grieving the loss that can never be filled again, Madeline said, “I have no words. I just miss you. I don’t know my life without you. I have never experienced a pain like this. I am so blessed you choose me to be your wife.. to love me. you are the best thing about me. I know you are watching down in just as much pain as I am looking up. I will keep going for you and our son. I love you so much Matthew.”
Spending more than a decade together, and then when death breaks you apart, it’s something that rips away a part of you. But what we find immensely emancipating is how both Madeline and Meredith keep Matthew and Johnny alive in every step they drop ahead. Previously, Meredith had in collaboration with the Columbus Blue Jackets and LineChangeCo, designed a limited-edition crewneck inspired by the team’s third jersey colors. The proceeds from the sales of the jersey are set to benefit the foundation, thereby adding to its mission of uplifting communities and supporting young athletes.
The loss of the two brothers left a void within their family and us. Nothing really can fill it up. But it’s a worthy moment to witness how his family treasures their memories and keeps them alive through noble causes amongst us and the NHL community.
