Matt LaFleur’s Packers Announce Huge QB Decision After Heeding Jordan Love’s Roster Demands

4 min read

A week ago, he was just another unfamiliar name at rookie minicamp, tucked behind draft picks and longshots. No camera crew. No headlines. Just a Canadian quarterback throwing spirals in Packers gear while most fans scrolled past the footage. But inside Green Bay’s camp, something clicked—and now, a behind-the-scenes move is pushing its way to the surface, one that could shake up the quarterback depth chart behind Jordan Love.

“I think we are gonna be straight. I tell people all the time.” That’s how Packers running back Josh Jacobs summed up Green Bay’s confidence for 2025. After a season that ended in frustration, Matt LaFleur’s team is determined to reset and reload under Jordan Love’s leadership—and the front office is doing its part, including adding eight draft prospects. But a new report signals they aren’t done yet.

NFL reporter Dave Naylor surprised fans with a major update on the Packers’ quarterback depth: “According to an NFL source, the Packers are expected to offer a contract to former Laurier QB Taylor Elgersma.” The Canadian standout attended Green Bay’s rookie minicamp and had also been scheduled to join Buffalo’s camp later this week. But it looks like Green Bay moved first.

According to an @NFL source, the @packers are expected to offer a contract to former @Laurier QB Taylor Elgersma. Elgersma attended mini-camp with the Packers last weekend and had been planning to attend @BuffaloBills mini-camp May 9-10th. #NFL

Elgersma went undrafted this year despite a breakout senior season. But there was plenty of interest in seeing his arm talent up close before letting him slip away. As noted by NFL insider Tom Pelissero on April 26, “Former Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks QB Taylor Elgersma — who had only played Canadian football until getting invited to all-star games, including the Senior Bowl — is slated to attend the #Packers and Bills rookie minicamps.”

In 2024, Elgersma played 13 games, completing 275 of 374 passes (73.5%) for 4,011 yards and 34 touchdowns. He’s known for his sharp reads and precise accuracy—traits that fit perfectly into Matt LaFleur’s system. If the Packers do finalize the contract, the Canadian QB could serve as a valuable backup to Jordan Love, especially with no clear No. 2 behind him yet. While Elgersma’s contract figures remain undisclosed, the opportunity alone signals Green Bay’s openness to unconventional talent—a potential life-changing pivot for the undrafted signal-caller.

Jordan Love is waiting for a cornerback decision from Matt LaFleur

While the offense is evolving, Jordan Love is keeping a close eye on the other side of the ball. Namely, whether cornerback Jaire Alexander—one of the best defensive backs in the game—will stay in Green Bay. On May 7, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the team and Alexander “are working on a resolution that should materialize soon,” hinting at a revised deal to balance his elite skill with his injury history.

“He’s a guy we need around the locker room. He’s a character. That’s a guy, you never know what you’re going to get,” Jordan Love told Kay Adams during an April 18 appearance, voicing his support for keeping Alexander on the roster. Alexander’s current contract carries an average annual salary of $21 million, with two years remaining. But his track record of injuries—missing time in every season since 2017 except 2019—makes his future with the franchise uncertain.

For Love, however, the logic is simple: keep your playmakers close. Whether it’s in the backfield, at receiver, or in the secondary, the 25-year-old quarterback is asking for stability as he leads the next era in Titletown. With Taylor Elgersma potentially joining the QB room and Alexander’s fate still hanging in the balance, the Packers’ offseason decisions are shaping up to define much more than just 2025.
