Major NFL Draft Setback for Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter as National Analyst Highlights Looming Concern

4 min read

Woah! The offseason is getting hot in both college football and in the NFL. This marks the time of transition. Right now certain names have the spotlight on them. That includes Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward, Travis Hunter, and Abdul Carter. But as the rule goes, the preference is going to weigh on someone’s side while the other gets pushed into the back seat. In this case, it turns out that the Colorado Buffaloes dual-phenom Hunter and Penn State defensive end Carter have landed in choppy waters. Why though? The analysts continue to shower praise on a particular position. And we all know what that means, right? A sharp fall in Hunter and Carter’s draft stocks.

Let’s start with Travis Hunter. All throughout the 2024 season, the Buffs two-way star has maintained a seat in the front row. He came up with the perfect ending to his college football career bagging the Heisman Trophy. So, it’s obvious that he dreamt big about his NFL future. The young athlete also saw himself as the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, his dreams took a backseat as CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso dropped Hunter to the sixth overall pick. Reportedly, NFL scouts have found “one red flag” in him. As one of the scouts noted, the Buffs’ dual-threat “lacks technique in some areas.” If Hunter had thought that this was enough, here comes another blow.

I love all of the interaction and passion about these comments.

I will say this. There are no SURE things in the NFL draft, regardless of position….

But there is one ABSOLUTE SURE THING IN THE NFL —- if you don’t have a quarterback, you don’t have a chance. https://t.co/B0cqWuuXod

Browns Daily podcast host Nathan Zegura shared his take on Field Yates’ mock draft. Talking about Shedeur and Ward, he said, “Guess what? That position is more important than all positions combined.” Zegura takes the example of the Cleveland Browns and how they are trying to play safe by not drafting a quarterback. But that’s when he came up with a reality check, “Because until we have a quarterback none of this matters.”

Zegura later retweeted the tweet and specially mentioned in the caption, “But there is one ABSOLUTE SURE THING IN THE NFL — if you don’t have a quarterback, you don’t have a chance.” Now it’s obvious that the NFL suitors would follow the analyst’s advice to the T and run after the quarterbacks. This ushers in bad news for Hunter whose drafts are likely to drop further down. The same goes for Abdul Carter who campaigned to be the No.1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

As NFL Rookie Watch reported, “There are reportedly scouts that have Abdul graded as their No. 1 overall prospect. A handful of scouts also reportedly believe Carter is an ‘even better prospect’ than Micah Parsons was coming out of Penn State.” Meanwhile, Hunter’s drooping stocks have already made an NFL legend and sports commentator upset. Who? Let’s see.

The legends have Travis Hunter’s back

Just as always, the universe gives Hunter enough signs to not give up on his hope in the darkest times. Thanks to Colorado Buffaloes grad assistant and ex-NFL player Warren Sapp. On the Rich Eisen Show, he claimed, “Rich, I called a friend of mine in week two and I said he’s going to win the Heisman I had never seen anything like it.” He did not inch back before comparing Hunter with himselfSapp made a bold comment, “I know I was a dawg in college…mhm can’t touch him. Cover a nine-route, turn around, run a D and run all the way to the end zone…it was sick.”

He became Hunter’s biggest hype man promoting the two-way star as, “It could be a package where he’s a decoy too.” After all, the Buffs’ dual threat is the one who is fulfilling Sapp’s unfinished dream. The Hall of Famer’s efforts fell short in the Heisman race of 1994 when he finished 6th.

So, Hunter bagging the trophy came off as a personal win for Sapp. Now what about Rich Eisen? Pulling Travis Hunter down in the 2025 NFL mock draft did not sit well with the long-time analyst. On his show, Eisen fumed saying, “How the hell is he not the number one overall draft choice, right?” With the quarterbacks taking center stage as game-changers, let’s hope Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter don’t get stuck with the tab!
