Madison Keys stepped onto the court for her third-round match at Wimbledon feeling good, riding high after a solid straight-sets victory against Olga Danilović. The American had started the grass-court season strong, building on her Australian Open title and consistent Grand Slam performances this year. Being the sixth seed, everyone thought she would go far in the tournament, and there was a lot of excitement about her possibly matching Serena Williams’ feat of winning both the Australian Open and Wimbledon in the same season.
Her opponent, 37‑year‑old Laura Siegemund, was enjoying a career-high run, having already reached her first third round at Wimbledon by defeating Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. Siegemund came out strong in the first game, looking really composed as she broke Keys’ serve early and kept up the pressure throughout.
Keys, clearly out of sync, had a tough time with her second serve and made a bunch of unforced errors, which let Siegemund take the first set 6–3. In the second set, Siegemund really started to feel it and her confidence just took off. She broke Keys again by taking advantage of some weak serves and keeping Keys stuck behind the baseline. As the match went on, you could really feel the tension in the air.
Siegemund, who had been on a roll without dropping a set in the tournament until she faced Keys, kept up her energetic and assertive shot-making, making it tough for Keys to catch up. Even though she was really strong, Keys just couldn’t get back in control. Her usually strong forehand just didn’t deliver those consistent winners, and when the pressure hit during key moments, it really shook her composure. Siegemund wrapped up the match in straight sets, pulling off one of the tournament’s biggest surprises by defeating Keys with a score of 6–3, 6–3.
