For a boxing great like Mike Tyson to recognize and elevate another fighter’s legacy, you know that fighter must have passed through more than a few filters. Tyson has long made it clear who he considers among the greatest of all time. So it came as a surprise to many fans when he paid a heartfelt tribute to a name known mostly to diehard boxing historians: Teofilo Stevenson. His words echoed powerfully through ‘Teofilo: Boxing’s Most Revolutionary Champion.‘ The new documentary is reigniting conversations around the Cuban icon’s legacy.
After breaking ground with a trendsetting film on Jamaican music legend Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, California-based filmmaker and music producer Ethan Higbee returned with a fresh, poignant take on another legend. This time from the boxing world. Created in collaboration with the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, the film recently premiered at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles. It earned a nomination for Best Documentary Feature. The documentary features heavyweight names like George Foreman, Bob Arum, and Mike Tyson. It delves not only into Stevenson’s awe-inspiring amateur career but also into the political climate, personal convictions, and cultural pride that shaped his story.
A champion forged in principle: Stevenson’s loyalty, legacy, and Mike Tyson’s powerful tribute
Though Stevenson passed away in 2012, his legacy endures. A three-time Olympic gold medalist, he left an indelible mark on amateur boxing. Speaking to The Ring, Higbee shared that what moved him most was Stevenson’s ‘unwavering dedication and integrity’. The rare kind of loyalty that no amount of money could buy.
That sentiment was perfectly captured in one of Tyson’s most striking quotes from the film: “Everyone has a price, but not everyone’s price is money.” It’s a statement loaded with meaning. While everyone has something they value deeply enough to change course for, not everyone is driven by wealth. Some people are motivated by loyalty, dignity, or love for their homeland. Teofilo Stevenson was that kind of man.
At the height of his fame, Stevenson famously refused multi-million-dollar offers to turn professional, including a potential dream fight against Muhammad Ali. He remained in Cuba, loyal to Fidel Castro‘s regime, despite the personal fortune he could have made overseas. His ‘price’ wasn’t money. It was pride, national identity, and unwavering principle.
In clips from the documentary, Mike Tyson reflected on the rarity of such character: “He was legendary….. You must worship him. Loyalty, how to find that stuff.”
The champion who said no
Coming from someone like Tyson, who has experienced the extreme highs and crushing lows of boxing, the words carry extra weight. Tyson was once the most recognized face in sports, with untold riches at his feet. Only to later fall from grace and declare bankruptcy. He knows what it means to chase the dream and pay the price.
Against that Teofilo Stevenson chose principles over profit.

Stevenson’s 1972 Olympic gold reportedly ended the U.S.’s dominance in the heavyweight division and helped establish Cuba as the most dominant Olympic boxing nation. A pivotal moment in his story remains the unmaterialized fight with Muhammad Ali. It was a bout many believe could have been one of the most legendary showdowns in boxing history. Bob Arum offered new insight into that ‘what-if’ moment in the documentary.
Higbee positions Stevenson not just as a great boxer, but as the first ‘postmodern’ heavyweight. A man defined not by money or fame, but by unshakeable ideals. After a glowing reception at the Pan African Film Festival, the film is now in the process of securing wider distribution.
