When the playoffs got close, not many people outside of Lynchburg, Virginia, paid attention to the Flames. The moral of every good fairy tale is that you should never give up on the underdog.
Liberty University was seen as a strong squad but not a favourite going into the NCAA Regionals. Especially with top-seeded Texas A&M looming large in their bracket, their road was littered with obstacles. With a 48-11 season and a squad full of skill, the Aggies were the Goliaths to Liberty’s David.
Liberty University took on Texas A&M in the first match. Many expected this squad to sail through the Regionals. The Flames, however, had different plans. Her exceptional hitting skills garnered her the honor of Conference USA Player of the Year, a recognition of her substantial impact on Liberty University’s softball triumph.
When asked after the game, she couldn’t believe that they had done it. She said, “I’m just trying to process everything.We were battling all day long. It took us, I don’t know, many hours? Eight hours? Whatever we needed to do to get it done, we did it.”
The game against the top team, Texas A&M, in the NCAA Regionals was the turning point in Roupe’s season. She played a crucial role. In the sixth inning, she hit a three-run home run that put Liberty ahead, and they went on to win 6-5. Her talent and capacity to produce under pressure were on full display.
