“Leon Will Never Main Event Again” – Insider Gives Leon Edwards a Hard-Hitting Reminder on Losing to Sean Brady at UFC London

5 min read

In his last fight at UFC 304, Leon Edwards looked nowhere close to his best against Belal Muhammad. The Palestinian-American beat the Birmingham-based Jamaican former champ from pillar to post, effectively shutting down the latter’s offense (and counter-offense) with his relentless pressure and wrestling. If there’s one way to define what happened at UFC 304, it’s that Muhammad broke Edwards over the course of five rounds. Now, about 8 months cut off from that loss, Leon Edwards is main-eventing the upcoming UFC London card. But veteran Chael Sonnen feels this might be the last time we might see Leon Edwards headline.

‘The American Gangster’ took to his YouTube channel to discuss the fight and fans of Edwards might not be happy hearing it. Brady is walking into the fight with a lot of hype mainly with patented ability to end fights via submission. However, one just cannot look past the former champion who is a master striker in himself. But according to Chael Sonnen, there is a lot at stake for both fighters when they step inside the Octagon in the O2 Arena.

Sonnen feels, for Brady this might be the last chance if he doesn’t get past the challenge of Edwards and said, “And I don’t know that I envy Sean Brady’s position a whole lot more. Listen if Sean Brady doesn’t get the jump on Leon, he is never going back to a main event. He will never be in conversation for a world title again.”

“He will never be in the conversation for a world title again. And this is his second shot the night that he got brought in. They thought he was going to get the jump on Belal. So now they are bringing him back in the main event.” said Sonnen. The same goes for ‘Rocky’ as well feels the former UFC fighter. Sonnen further added, “However, Leon will never main event again. Sean loses he will never being in to fight for a world title again. If Leon loses he will never main event again. It’s a massive difficult situation. I don’t envy it. It is truly the worst circumstance for every fighter.”

Edwards has a lot to prove when he takes on the #5 ranked welterweight in the division, especially after his last fight. Muhammad used his wrestling skills and clearly dominated their fight at UFC 304.

This is what exactly Brady is planning to do and has even predicted a submission victory against the former champion. The pair recently had a look at each other during the weigh-ins ahead of UFC Fight Night 255. Edwards definitely holds a bit of an advantage in terms of his height and reach. But it seems despite having the height and reach advantage, UFC light heavyweight fighter Anthony Smith warns ‘Rocky’ about the problems he will face against Brady.

Sean Brady will be a tough ask for Leon Edwards as revealed by ‘Lion Heart’

MMA journalist Luke Thomas has rightly described Sean Brady as having a “gorilla frame”. The comment is a testament to his thick, powerhouse build that makes him a physical menace in the welterweight division. Adding to the intrigue, veteran light heavyweight contender Anthony Smith has now voiced concern for Leon Edwards. Speaking on On Paper with Anthony Smith, the former title challenger reflected on Edwards’ past bout with Belal Muhammad before shifting his focus to the dangerous challenge the British champion faces this weekend. He even went on to compare the 32-year-old to a famous Marvel character.

Smith said, “You know it is what it is, but Sean Brady if he shows up at his best. Leon is gonna have a tough time! I have heard horror stories. I have never grappled with him. I’ve never wrestled with him. But people that I have a lot of respect for in terms of wrestling and their grappling ability have nothing good to say about their experiences grappling and wrestling with Sean Brady.”

The 36-year-old further pointed out as to how technical the American grappler is and even termed him as The Hulk. He further added, “They say he’s like the Incredible Hulk and he’s wildly technical, super clean, really fast, never gets tired. They say it’s like being in there with a gorilla-like he’s just so damn strong. If Leon ends up dealing with that problem, I don’t know that he’s gonna deal with it very well.”
