Lamont Roach Jr. Addresses Speculations of Suing Gervonta Davis After Being “Robbed” of a Knockdown

4 min read

Things may have just gone from bad to worse for Gervonta Davis, as talks of a lawsuit have taken over the fight against Lamont Roach Jr. The Baltimore native is already facing questions about his abilities after ‘The Reaper’ not only went the distance but also managed to produce a majority draw, which many feel was a robbery from Roach Jr.

But what has people riled up is the incident in the ninth round of the fight! The now-infamous knee incident saw Davis drop down to his knee, just to run to his corner to get his face wiped off. He revealed later that grease from his hair had trickled down to his eyes, irritating them. However, the problem was Davis didn’t face any consequences because of it.

Referee Steve Willis started a ten count but stopped to let Davis keep fighting without any issues. This directly affected the final scores. If the knockdown was counted, it would have given Roach Jr. the win by decision. Previously, the NYSAC claimed a “technical issue” prevented them from reviewing the incident during the fight, but now, they have launched an investigation that can push the decision in Roach Jr.’s favor.

Roach himself has sent a letter to the NYSAC to change the majority decision in his favor, but the end result is still up to anybody’s guess. As Davis’ fate hangs in the balance, reporter Elie Seckbach of ES News brought up boxers suing other boxers because of their fights. “Idk personally not a fan of fighters lawyering up…,” he wrote in a tweet.

“It’s a slippery slope, Take care of business in the ring. So many examples of fighters who could’ve sued (legit reasons) but never did…”  A recent example of fighters lawyering up after a fight is the Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney fight in April last year. Haney sued Garcia after the latter beat the boxing out of him during the fight en route to a majority decision win.

However, Ostarine was found in his system, so the NYSAC suspended Garcia for a year. Despite that, Haney took Garcia to court. Haney has since agreed to drop the case if Garcia gives him a rematch, which is supposed to unfold later this year. Regardless, Lamont Roach Jr. quickly responded to Seckbach’s tweet, feeling it was directed at him after he was robbed of a knockdown, and a win indirectly.

“I did take care of that s**t in the ring, Elie,” Roach wrote back. “You [a]bout to make me get on yo a** with this bias s**t. I know he yo peoples and s**t but leave it be. I ain’t SUE nobody mf. I’m getting a CLEAR knockdown situated that they ROBBED me of. GET IT RIGHT MF! Report that.”  As the world awaits what the NYSAC would do, Davis has received a response from a hair grease company.

Hair Grease Co. to Gervonta Davis: ‘Use Us, Dodge Drama!’

Gervonta Davis’ controversial ninth-round knockdown against Lamont Roach has sparked plenty of debate—and now, a hair product company is stepping in with a solution. Murray’s Pomade, one of the most popular styling brands in the U.S., is urging Davis to switch to its products to avoid another greasy ring mishap.

“Murray’s Original Pomade, celebrating its 100th year, it’s very thick and waxy and would not drip in those conditions,” a company spokesperson told TMZ Sports. “He should have used our product and would not have worried ‘bout his do.”  You know what this means, regardless of what NYSAC does, Gervonta Davis now has another endorsement deal ready to make him some money.

That being said, it appears Lamont Roach Jr. is not officially suing Gervonta Davis—yet. While he did send NYSAC a letter urging them to change the decision, it’s yet to be seen whether the letter does its job. Or the controversy will go to court. Do you think Lamont Roach Jr. should sue Davis?
