Joaquin Niemann has won the 2025 LIV Golf Singapore! This marks his second win in the league for the season as he had also captured the Adelaide title a few weeks ago. The Torque GC captain has been in sublime touch since 2024. He was the second best player in LIV Golf last season. His two wins at LIV Golf Jeddah and Mayakoba set the stage for him to finish only 1 spot below Jon Rahm on the individual leaderboard. And now he is on track to finish at the top once again.
At this point, Niemann can be considered one of the best golfers in the world. He is right up there at the top with the likes of Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy. That is quite a prestigious list of players to be among. And there is no doubt that he would be proud of being up there. But is he the #1 player in the world? Not many would say that. But there is one individual who wholeheartedly believes so. At least that is what he has stated on X recently.
Just a few hours ago, Joaquin Niemann’s LIV Golf Torque GC tweeted “Joaquín Niemann has got to be a top 5 player in the world right now. Currently sits at the top of the leaderboard in Singapore for his 2 win of the season and 4th in @livgolf_league ” after their captain’s win. To that, Phil Mickelson surprisingly replied “Top 5? Try #1.” He seems to believe that Niemann is better than Rahm, Scheffler, Schauffele, and McIlroy. Of course, netizens ridiculed his claims as they bashed the 45x PGA Tour winner.
One of the fans even shared statistics that show how underwhelmingly Joaquin Niemann has performed against Scottie Scheffler in the majors. Their comment read “Scottie Scheffler and Joaquín Niemann have played in the same major championship 16 times. Phil Mickelson may have made a ridiculous claim, but he hasn’t backed off after facing the heat. And it seems that Kevin Kisner’s involvement in the conversation comparing Scottie Scheffler and Joaquin Niemann triggered him. After Kisner acknowledged the statistics, the original commenter responded with “Gotta paint the full picture.” It all seemed fun until Mickelson also dropped by.
The HyFlyers GC captain added “All true. Let’s keep these tweets and see what happens throughout this year.” It seems that Mickelson has extended a challenge that Joaquin Niemann will outperform Scottie Scheffler in 2025. While the world #1 may be out of form and throwing tantrums on the course, he certainly won’t back out of a challenge. The next time the two will face off will be at the Masters Tournament 2025 in the next few weeks. It will be interesting to see who performs better at Augusta National this year.
