This could be one of the biggest “What-if” in the sports industry. When a three-time NFL winner thinks about what could have happened if he had chosen baseball as a sport opens many doors. After making a major investment in a baseball franchise, he showed his love for this sport. Everybody knows Patrick Mahomes even if they don’t watch football and yet, one of the greatest quarterbacks of this generation remains close to baseball and still loves the ball game.
While growing up, the Kansas City Chiefs player was heavily exposed to sports and baseball in particular. His father Patrick Mahomes Sr. was a major league pitcher and played for teams like the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates. Seeing his father, who spent 22 years of his life playing baseball in MLB, Japan, and minor leagues, only served to grow his love.
Even during his younger days, he was an excellent ball player. Mahomes showed significant talent in baseball after he pitched a no-hitter 16-strike-out game. This led to him being picked by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th draft round. But Patrick Mahomes decided to pursue football at Texas Tech University. And the rest is history.
During a recent interview, he said, “I wish I would have been a little bit better at baseball, but I think it all worked out with football. I grew up loving baseball. I still love it. I root for the Royals hard. … I have a love for the game.”

He also has a very rich history with the city of Kansas. Playing for the Chiefs and winning 3 Super Bowls has made his connection to the city even stronger. But with his love for baseball still in mind, he made a choice to invest in the Kansas City Royals and as of 2020, is a minority owner for the team. As far as investing goes, he is also a part owner of MLS side Sporting Kansas City and the National Women’s Soccer League’s Kansas City Current.
But his love for the diamond remains, as he’s often spotted at games when football doesn’t keep him away. Mahomes may have left his baseball dreams aside but he continues to show support for the city he loved most. Even after a famous player recommended him to take the mound professionally.
A Legacy intertwined: Patrick Mahomes’ baseball bonds with MLB stars
Growing up in the MLB clubhouse with his father and being surrounded by ball players, not only did Patrick Mahomes come to know the diamond in and out but also made some famous friends. He developed a deep connection with Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees legend.
MLB’s A-Rod shared a very nostalgic memory of a very young Patrick Mahomes batting in the cage recently on social media, “I’m so glad @patrickmahomes didn’t listen to me! But in all seriousness, this story still gives me goosebumps.”
In Kansas, Mahomes is also friends with Bobby Witt Jr. Both sons of famous professional athletes, they must share a unique understanding with each other about balancing expectations and performance. Mahomes demonstrates friendship by teaching Witt helpful tips about dealing with pressure as well as preparing effectively. Witt has openly admired Mahomes because they share an easy relationship based on their common understanding.
Well, his job title may read QB but he could have used that rocket arm on the mound too!
