Kansas City is calling, and it’s calling for none other than Patrick Mahomes. Currently immersed in the rigor of OTAs and keeping an eye on the basketball playoffs, Mahomes remains a central figure in the city’s sports landscape. But amid the hustle and the headlines, a new wave of anticipation is building. A Kansas City hero has something significant to say. This isn’t just about football; it’s about leadership, legacy. And a big decision that could shape the future of the city and its beloved team.
The Kansas City Star female athlete, Krishna Lee, was on a Podcast on Vimeo. She is currently the General Manager of the Kansas City Glory, a women’s tackle football team—a sport introduced to encourage greater female participation in football. The team’s coach summed up the spirit of their mission perfectly: “Football has no type.” With that revolutionary mindset, this Kansas City leader is pushing for significant investment in women’s football as well.
We’ve seen women dominate in the NWSL, but as the interviewer pointed out, “The NWSL is not the MLS,” and “Women’s football is not the NFL.” That disparity in exposure and support raises real concerns about the future of women’s football. So when the interviewer asked Krishna Lee how to bring that level of development to women’s football, she responded with a powerful message. And that included an indirect appeal for support from within Kansas City.
Addressing the issue, Lee said: “So unlike all of those models that you presented there, we are a pay-to-play model in our league. That is a barrier that we, as an organization and as a full league, are trying to remove. But it takes time, right? And so building something that people within our community and across the nation can truly get behind is what is going to kind of get us to that next level.” It’s a tough reality. Significant investment often only follows visibility and demonstrated growth. But that’s exactly what Krishna Lee is working toward.
She continued: “We’re really starting to put some pieces together that I think are gonna get that pay-to-play barrier removed for us.” As we mentioned earlier, the GM of the Kansas City Glory is calling for a major leap forward in women’s football. Her vision? Women competing at the same level of exposure and opportunity as NFL players.
Lee added: “But that definitely comes with some more investment and sponsors that are willing to stand behind us and continue to uplift us as an organization. So that is sort of the next hurdle that we’re jumping.” Founded in 2019, Krishna’s tackle football franchise now welcomes women athletes of all sizes and ages. The only requirements? A positive attitude and a love for the game.
And let’s be honest—no conversation about football in Kansas City is complete without mentioning Patrick Mahomes. As Lee calls for investment and sponsorship, we can interpret it as a subtle nudge to Mahomes himself, who already owns a women’s soccer team.
Patrick Mahomes and his ownership in a $185M soccer club
The Kansas City Chiefs superstar is involved not only in football and a restaurant chain. But also in investing in other sports. Notably, the National Women’s Soccer League is popular in the US and other countries, the investment graph is showing an upward trend. And Mahomes is also involved in it. He and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, have ownership rights in the NWSL team ‘Kansas City Current’. Along with them, Angie Long and Chris Long are also stakeholders.

Kansas City founded its women’s soccer team on December 6, 2020, originally naming it Kansas City NWSL. However, the team later changed its name. The Blue Crew, a prominent supporters group, actively backs the soccer team. Other investors and supporters include Surface Tension and The Undertow. The investments grew over time in the National Women’s Soccer League since its inception 13 years ago.
Patrick Mahomes has been involved in the NWSL team’s ownership for the past three years. He joined Brittany Mahomes in 2022 to take a seat at the ownership table. The franchise currently has a value of 185 million dollars. This type of involvement and support, Krishna Lee wants in women’s football, as well. With the way to tackle football and its popularity are growing, the game is bound to be a ‘big stepper’ in the football world. Let’s see if women’s football gets the level of attention it wants.
