Kaan Ofli’s Nickname ‘Genghis’: How Did the UFC Featherweight Get His Moniker?

4 min read

Nicknames in the UFC aren’t just labels—they’re stories themselves. For Kaan Ofli, his nickname ‘Genghis’ hints at something deeper. Fighters’ nicknames often carry history, ambition, and sometimes their very identity. From Max Holloway’s ‘Blessed’ to Merab Dvalishvili’s ‘The Machine,’ each moniker tells a story.

But how did Ofli, a professional MMA fighter since 2014, earn his nickname? Was it due to his relentless drive? Or perhaps, a nod to the destiny he is forging with his own two fists?

How did Kaan Ofli’s Nickname ‘Genghis’ come about?

There’s no official explanation behind Kaan Ofli’s moniker. But if you connect the dots, the reasoning seems clear. The name ‘Kaan’ closely resembles ‘Genghis Khan,’ the legendary Mongolian ruler who carved out one of the largest empires in history. Much like the feared conqueror, Ofli seeks to leave his own mark—this time, in the UFC’s featherweight division.

The 31-year-old Australian-Turkish fighter has spent a decade clawing his way to the top. Growing up, life was anything but easy for Ofli. His mother, a Turkish immigrant, struggled to make ends meet in Australia. With no job, no family, and little English, she had two children to raise and nowhere to turn.

At age 14, he left school in Year 8—not for lack of ambition, but out of necessity. In an interview with Fox Sports, he confessed, “We were homeless and I needed to provide for her and my sister, so spent four years working as a brickie’s labourer. At one point we went and saw a social worker, asking for help … I don’t think she believed the story so mum took her outside to show how the three of us were sleeping in a car.”

But even in those darkest times, Ofli found an outlet—fighting. Initially, fighting was my coping mechanism,” he revealed. The gym became his escape, a place where the weight of the world disappeared with every punch, every grapple, every round. And as he sharpened his skills, the cage became more than an escape—it became his way to provide a better life for his family and re-write his destiny.

More about Ofli’s background and MMA career

Before setting his sights on the bright lights of the Octagon, Kaan Ofli racked up wins in Australia’s Hex Fight Series, UAE Warriors, and Brave Combat Federation. In his UFC.com Q&A, Ofli revealed that he even held the Hex Featherweight Title and the Bushido Europe Featherweight title.

Then came The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 32, where he joined Team Alexa Grasso and bulldozed his way to the featherweight tournament finals. Ofli’s aggressive, no-nonsense style caught the UFC’s attention. ‘Genghis’ stepped into the Octagon at UFC Vegas 96 with everything on the line. But standing in his way was Mairon Santos, a rising Brazilian star.

Unfortunately, Ofli suffered a brutal second-round knockout at the hands of Santos but confessed in an interview with the New Zealand Herald, “It is what it is, I learned a lot of things. I hadn’t lost in over eight years, and that was a 10-fight win streak that I was on, so I’ve definitely learned a lot from that.”

Now, at UFC Fight Night 250/ UFC On ESPN + 108, Kaan Ofli has the opportunity to put the lessons from his loss to the test. He’ll be taking on Muhammad Naimov, who is also coming off a loss in his last bout against Felipe Lima in 2024.

Just like his namesake, Kaan Ofli isn’t one to retreat. If history tells us anything, it’s that the great warriors don’t stop after one battle. They regroup. They come back stronger.
