Jannik Sinner Joins Taylor Fritz as US Open Swing Revamp Sparks Concerning Confession

“There’s not a, you know, it’s 1000s, and to be honest, last week and don’t get me wrong, I really like DC and I like playing the tournament, but with how busy my grass schedule was, I would have probably opted out of it.” American ATP pro and World No.4 Taylor Fritz didn’t mince words a few weeks back when he shared his unfiltered opinion on the Tour’s scheduling woes. Especially when it comes to Masters events leading up to the last Grand Slam of the season, US Open. Compared to Monte Carlo or Paris, Fritz wasn’t happy with how the format has changed lately for the ones taking place prior to the New York major. Guess what? He’s not the only one raising questions. Now, the Italian sensation and World No.1 Jannik Sinner has spoken on the matter.

Sinner won his Cincinnati Open semifinal on Saturday, besting France’s Terence Atmane in straight sets. He’s now set to face arch rival Carlos Alcaraz in the summit clash on Monday. Yes, it’s because the final (typically taking place on Sunday) will now be played on Monday for the ongoing Masters tournament. During the press conference, he was asked about this exact transition. “This year with the tournament changing, there’s an off day for the ATP players between the semifinal and the final. Do you like having that off day or would you rather play the final tomorrow and just be done with the tournament?”

Sinner’s take? Well, he tried to keep it as clear as possible when it comes to how the schedule has turned lately. According to him, “I love the one week events you know. The tournament in Monaco, for example, you have for Monte Carlo you have this one week event and you have the first round matches that are incredibly good, you know, and if some good seeded player loses, the next match, it’s an incredible match still, you know.”

Citing early seasonal events, he mentioned how the final usually happens on a Sunday and he prefers that format in general. “And now I lost a little bit the view of when does actually a finalist, you know, because it used to be always Sunday. Now here it’s Monday. In Toronto it’s Wednesday or Thursday, you know. So it’s difficult even for us players. We lose a little bit the days of the week, you know, I would say.”

However, he also had a different perspective on the entire situation saying, “If I have a three-hour match today, tomorrow I have a day off, it’s good. If not, I would like to play tomorrow. Yes. But if I would have an incredibly long match today, I would love to play Monday, you know. So it always depends on the view.”
