“Hey guys, don’t pay attention to anything [from] this f**king YouTuber. I just fight real fighters… no f**king around with Canelo! Come on – Let’s go!” As he settled with the Riyadh Season offer, ‘Canelo’ Alvarez reached out to fans. Late in January, talks of a potential matchup with Jake Paul gained strength. But the super middleweight king had plans of his own. He inked a four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh. The slam-dunk of an insult clearly didn’t sit well with Paul. Ever since, he has been calling out ‘Canelo’ Alvarez for ducking him.
It’s a common gripe he shares with David Benavidez. If it has been an endless chase for Benavidez, Paul almost had the fight in his bag. ‘The Problem Child’ hosted ‘The Mexican Monster’ in the ‘BS w/ Jake Paul’s latest episode. As one would expect, the Mexican icon was the focal point of their conversation. Before the mega fight with Terence Crawford, on May 3, ‘Canelo’ will face William Scull. Why would he turn down a fight with the biggest influencer-boxer in the world? Jake Paul believes a hefty nine-figure sum and subtle warnings successfully dissuaded ‘Canelo.’
David Benavidez didn’t hide his frustration. ‘Canelo’ has been consistently ignoring his callouts. He said, “I’ve been there for the past three years, and honestly, this fight it makes the sense.” Soon Jake Paul pitched in. Despite his personal differences with Dana White, he respects the fact that in the UFC, the ‘best fight the best.’

Citing the persistent problem with boxing, he highlighted the latest case where ‘Canelo’ will fight a ‘random a** guy.’ Both Paul and Benavidez criticized Canelo for fighting Terence Crawford. Instead of facing more challenging opponents in his weight class, he is fighting an opponent who has to move two divisions up.
“He’s like throwing away the Mexican fans to go fight, fight, fight in Saudi for the paycheck, and that’s basically what happened. I can explain the situation with me,” ‘The Problem Child’ added. Speaking about his lineup with Alvarez, Paul emphasized everything was close to being finalized. A signed Letter of Intent (LOI) and a confidentiality agreement were in place.
Jake Paul vs. ‘Canelo’ Alvarez: Is there more to this than what it seems at first glance?
However, he alleged that Turki Alalshikh strongly opposed the fight. So he actively tried to sabotage it for weeks. Jake Paul claimed Alalshikh repeatedly called ‘Canelo’ and his trainer, Eddie Reynoso, questioning why they were considering the fight (with Paul). Allegedly, the Riyadh Season head went so far as to threaten to cancel ‘Canelo’s three-fight deal if he went ahead with the Jake Paul fight.

“He had to threaten Canelo to pull his three-fight deal. You’re not fighting Crawford. I’m not paying you any of this money, and he’s basically paying him over a hundred million dollars for this random ass fight in May,” said the former Disney star. Paul suggested that ‘Canelo’ ultimately decided to take the money and avoid the fight with him.
While details are scarce, it’s a no-brainer that ‘Canelo’ Alvarez must have been promised a hefty payout for the four-fight deal with Riyadh Season. His three-fight deal with PBC was around $100 million. But there’s a bigger question here. A fight with Jake Paul could have been a big money spinner. How would it impact Alvarez’s legacy, and perhaps boxing as a whole?
What do you think? Should ‘Canelo’ have fought Jake Paul instead of opting to face the lesser-known Scull?
