J Prince Flirts With Gervonta Davis Alliance… After Shakur Stevenson Beats Him

5 min read

As Shakur Stevenson said himself, “At the end of the day… He’s the big star… Who am I to throw an offer to the biggest star in boxing? What am I going to offer him?” And you know what? He’s absolutely right. When it comes to Shakur Stevenson’s next opponent, the ball is completely in Gervonta Daviscourt. No matter who you ask—casual fans, die-hards—everyone wants to see Tank Davis fighting the Newark native. But does Tank even want it now? Well, if you caught his interview with Stephen A. Smith before his March 1 bout, he did say yes. But hey, this is Gervonta Davis we’re talking about. One minute it’s ‘Let’s go,’ and the next—it’s crickets.

However, let’s not forget—Gervonta Davis’ undefeated shine took a bit of a hit when he stepped into the ring with Lamont Roach Jr., a guy he’d beaten twice in the amateurs. Everyone thought it’d be an easy night. But what happened? Roach showed up with something to prove. Not only did he give Tank a tough fight, but Gervonta Davis even took an unscored knee. The result? A draw. So, a rematch is likely coming—possibly around June 21 in Las Vegas. But here’s the real question: what happens after that? Because fans aren’t going to be satisfied. They want that Shakur vs. Tank. And according to Stevenson’s manager, J Prince, there’s no good reason for it not to happen.

J Prince wants to take Gervonta Davis to “the next level”

In a recent conversation with Fight Hub TV, J Prince broke it down. He said, “I think the people involved just have to want to make the fight.” And when it comes to money? Oh, there’s no loser in that fight. “Once Gervonta say, ‘Okay, I’m gonna run my own career. I’mma be my own man and I’mma get this money’, because ain’t no loser in that fight,” Prince said. He added: “He just has to stand on his two and say, ‘Yo, let’s get it on, homie’.”

But then, the interviewer brought up something Gervonta Davis said ahead of his fight with Lamont Roach. Apparently, when asked about facing Shakur Stevenson, Tank dismissed him, claiming the Newark Southpaw has done little in the sport. Shakur Stevenson’s manager wasn’t having that. He straight-up called it what it is: “An excuse and an exit plan.”

Let’s not forget, the WBC Lightweight champion is an Olympic silver medalist, and Prince believed that he alone holds a lot more weight than Tank’s trying to give him credit for. “We ain’t trying to hear that,” he said bluntly. From J Prince’s point of view, this is the fight the whole world wants, and there’s no reason to delay it. As the interview progressed, he further stated, “I look forward to working with Gervonta someday… I could befriend him and take him to the next level.” So basically, J Prince is already thinking ahead to a future alliance with the very fighter his guy Shakur Stevenson is aiming to beat. But here’s where it gets interesting!

After throwing a little shade at Gervonta Davis’ excuses, J Prince said he respects him. Why? Because “He from the hood and I know, you know, when we all from the hood, we can relate to one another just a little better.” That’s chess, not checkers. Anyway, at this point, we can’t tell whether J Prince will do business with Gervonta Davis or not. But it looks like Gervonta Davis will have to right his last wrong before he can think of future fights. Why?

Gervonta Davis hit rock bottom

It’s been over a month since the fight, and now The Ring—yep, the same news outlet backed by GEA chairman HE Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season—has shaken things up in their pound-for-pound rankings. And guess who got the boot? It’s the WBA lightweight champion Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis. Just before his fight with Lamont Roach Jr., the 30-0 boxer held the #8 spot. But now? He’s vanished from the list entirely.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – MARCH 01: Gervonta Davis takes a knee in the middle of round nine due to the grease in his braids dripped into his eyes against Lamont Roach Jr. during their bout for Davis’ WBA lightweight title at Barclays Center on March 01, 2025 in New York City. Taking his place? David Benavidez, the ‘Interim’ WBA light heavyweight champion, slid in at #10. Oh, and Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev did a little shuffle—swapping 4th and 5th spots—but aside from that, the rest of the rankings remain the same.

Now, before you start writing Tank off completely—hold up. Not everyone’s ready to consider him quits. Timothy Bradley came to his defense. In his chat with BoxingScene, Bradley said, “Tank is not overrated, or anything like that. I know a lot of people are saying that.” According to him, Tank just had a rough night against a tough dude.

That said, Eddie Hearn and Team Shakur Stevenson are willing to wait till September to see what Tank decides. Meanwhile, do you think fans will finally get the fight they’ve been begging for—Shakur Stevenson vs. Gervonta Davis? And if they do step in the ring… who do you think takes it? Drop your take—we’re all ears.
