5 min read

For Augusta National, Justin Rose is proving to be a rockstar! When asked about his chance at winning at Augusta National, he replied on Friday, “I think I’ll take it any time.” And, well, if you’re looking at his games in the first two rounds, this might be his year! Currently sitting atop the leaderboard, Rose is giving many American golfers a run for their money. But if Justin Rose is so familiar with the American course, the question remains: is Justin Rose American?

Let’s set the record straight. Son to Annie Rose and Ken Rose, Justin Rose was born on July 30, 1980, in the vibrant city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Justin Peter Rose is a professional golfer whose journey is as captivating as his game. At just five years old, his family relocated to Hook, Hampshire, England, where he quickly embraced his new surroundings. Justin Rose holds dual citizenship in both Britain and South Africa, beautifully blending his heritage.

This remarkable blend of South African energy and British elegance has shaped a golfer whose story continues to unfold with excitement and mystery on the greens! But also tells you one important thing: Justin Rose isn’t American. While he embraces his roots, he primarily resides in Albany, New Providence, in the Bahamas with his family. This choice of residence not only reflects his lifestyle but also aligns perfectly with his professional schedule, making travel to PGA Tour events more convenient. However, in 2023, he was reported to move to London. So, how did the golf game treat a young Justin Rose?

Justin Rose grew up playing at Tylney Park, Southwood, and Hartley Wintney Golf Club in Hampshire. He spent most of his junior golf career at the nearby North Hants Golf Club. Rose began playing golf immediately upon their arrival. By the age of 14, he had already achieved an impressive plus-three handicap. But his first 70 came long before that at the age of 11. But by the time he turned 17, he was already a professional. However, did you know the current Augusta National sensation’s golf calling came thanks to his late father and coach, Ken Rose? Well, if not, take a look!

Justin Rose’s father was his greatest friend, ally, & coach

When Justin Rose’s father, Ken Rose, passed away in 2002, the bereaved son could think of one way of thanking his father for all he had done for him. When Ken Rose passed away in 2002, Justin Rose said, “Dad has been everything to me. My guide, my mentor, my best friend.” When he made his first win in January 2002 at the Dunhill Championship, he dedicated it to his father. Rose said, “My dad’s not so well and he is the guy I owe most to. He’s put a lot of time, a lot of hours into my game. This win is for him more than anybody.”

But Justin Rose’s love for his father followed him in 2013 as well with his win at the 2013 U.S. Open. Rose once again dedicated it to his late father. Talking about his win and his father after the win at the 2013 U.S. Open, Justin Rose said, “I phoned my mum after my round and we both were in floods of tears speaking to each other; she misses my dad immensely. I miss him immensely. And I thought it was just a fitting time in which I could honor him by looking up.” And it makes sense, as part of the reason Justin Rose got into the sport is because of his father, and his father was his biggest supporter.

Interestingly, Ken Rose served as his sole teacher until he passed away from leukemia in 2002. As Justin emerged as a promising young golfer, becoming the youngest player in the Walker Cup and a standout at the 1998 Open, Ken was always by his side. He was seen under a straw hat and exuding quiet confidence. Even when Justin  Rose struggled as a professional at just 18, failing to make the cut in 21 consecutive tournaments, Ken remained a steadfast support. How? By caddying for him or keeping track of his statistics. Their close bond included sharing rooms, meals, and countless hours, despite criticism from others who believed Justin needed to learn independence.

Regardless of whether Justin Rose ends up clinching the title at the 2025 Masters Tournament or not, we know Ken Rose is one of the key figures in Justin Rose’s gameplay. Maybe, if everything goes well, we will even see Justin Rose dedicate another win to his late father!
