It is officially the end of an era in San Antonio. The oldest head coach in the NBA, Gregg Popovich, has stepped away from his duties, the San Antonio Spurs announced. This comes after the 76-year-old living legend suffered an unfortunate stroke back in November and did not return to the sidelines for the rest of the season. Popovich is the winningest and the longest-tenured coach in the history of the NBA. He took over the helm at Spurs in 1996 and has won five NBA championships since, with the latest coming in 2014.
“While my love and passion for the game remain, I’ve decided it’s time to step away as head coach,” said Popovich in his statement. “I’m forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff, and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community, and city that are so meaningful to me.”
This is a developing story…
