‘If I Was Your Wife…’: Amanda Balionis Makes Honest Confession After Jordan Spieth’s Scary Shot

4 min read

Who thought missing the fairway could be a life-or-death situation? There have been many instances in golf where, due to wind, wrong trajectory, and precision, golfers have missed the fairways. But just missing the fairways isn’t an issue, continuing from there is. Take the example of the recent incident at AT&T Pebble Beach 2025, Scottie Scheffler missed the fairway and landed on the beach. Despite that penalty zone, the world no.1 went on to take the shot and made it to the fairway back again.

However, his shot was not that risky as compared to what Jordan Spieth experienced at AT&T Pebble Beach’s eighth hole in 2022. The golfer encountered a horrifying shot where, a wrong step, could end up in a scary situation. Talking about the same, even famous golf journalist Amanda Balionis spoke up about that incident.

Going back in time and reviving that memory, Skratch has shared the interview of Spieth with Amanda Balionis where they talked about the follow-up shot after hitting a 256-yard drive and landing on the edge of the 68-foot-high cliff. Balionis asked, “I said if I was your wife, Annie, I would be ready to murder you if you didn’t already fall off that cliff. Was it as terrifying when you were on the ground as it looked when we had the blimp shot looking overhead because it looked like it was an extreme sport!”

Sharing about the shot experience, Spieth said, “As I first walked up to it, I got really nervous. It was by far the most nerve-wracking shot I’ve ever hit.” Further speaking, he also shared how the caddie even felt that he should have thrown the ball away to avoid hitting the shot. But Spieth aimed to convert into the par putt as it wasn’t worth the risk. His caddie, Michael Greller had told him after the shot that he should’ve grabbed the ball and into the water instead.

He even said, “I’ve never had a life and death situation on a shot before, so that’s why I thought I wouldn’t really have nerves the rest of the day after that one.” Eventually after taking the most dangerous shot, he ended up with the par.

While this was a really scary situation and was ensured that it would be once in a lifetime. After 2022, no one would encounter the same situation.

What are the measures taken after Jordan Spieth’s shot?

After the adrenaline-filled shot, the PGA Tour’s chief referee, who knew the risk, shared the important measures taken by the team. Gary Young shared with ESPN’s Paolo Uggetti that the red hazard line has been removed and the rough grass has increased to prevent the ball from landing in that area.

As per Bleacher Report, he said, “I know that as a club, they make a concerted effort to try to move that line further away. Resort play, that’s been their concern, and they just want to make sure that they’re doing everything that they can to discourage people from attempting that shot.”

Even Spieth asked the report about attempting the shot over your life. He said, “Does the reward outweigh the risk? Not if you think the risk was dying.” Indeed, the penalty is a better and safer option for the golfer. What do you think about it? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
