“I talk to Brooks Koepka all the time. I love Brooks Koepka, and I’m not going to say anything extra except I talk to him all the time. He wants to come back. I will say that: I believe he really wants to come back and play the Tour,” Fred Couples told Seattle’s KJR 93.3 FM last week. But, the basis for this is not completely rooted in mystery. Brooks Koepka is among several LIV Golf stars nearing contract expirations. Adding to the intrigue, he attended the TGL match on February 25—despite the league being exclusive to PGA Tour players. If you’re keeping up, don’t the twists just keep coming?
Because just a few weeks ago, Koepka had made it clear at the LIV Golf Adelaide event. He is not going anywhere. “Yeah, I think — actually I know that I can speak for all the players. This is the one event every year that we look forward to coming back. We’ve got the most fans, the most energy,” stated Koepka. That is not the statement someone, who is looking to jump ship at the earliest, makes. “That’s what LIV Golf is about. Make it fun for the players, make it fun for the fans and families that come out, and I think this event just proves exactly what we’ve been trying to do year after year,” Koepka added. It’s a vibe completely different from what Fred Couples’s version of Koepka seems like.
And this seemed to have registered on some level with the 5-time major winner. Koepka had recently taken part in the Hong Kong edition of LIV Golf, finishing T35 with a score of 5 under par across three days. While the score was nothing to write about, what he said later definitely turned some heads. Post the event, Koepka took to Instagram to share a photo of him competing at LIV Hong Kong. It was captioned, “Right where I want to be @smashgc onto Singapore,” a very not-so-cryptic dig at Couples’s statement.
That coupled with the American golfer’s statement in Australia seemed to be a proper announcement that he intends to stay with the Saudi-backed Tour. Koepka since joining the breakaway Tour, has been slowly making the right kind of waves.
Brooks Koepka’s Contract is Running Out—Could He Make a U-Turn?
Ever since joining LIV Golf for reportedly $130 million, Brooks Koepka has been very closely scrutinized. And he has delivered. He leads LIV Golf with five wins—three in 2023 and two in 2024—finishing 5th in both points and earnings last season. Then, in his debut year, he finished T2 at the Masters and won the PGA Championship. But, his recent major form has dipped, with 2024 marking just the second time in a decade he failed to crack a top 10.
No one really knows what’s going on behind closed doors, but the outcome will reshape the sport. Political figures, including Donald Trump, have entered the fray, hinting at power plays beyond the fairways.
Laurie Canter’s already back on the PGA Tour, and Rory McIlroy‘s telling young guys like McKibbin to think twice before chasing LIV’s cash. Meanwhile, that PGA-LIV merger? Still stuck. Even Monahan says talks are going nowhere. Do you think we’ll ever see all the big names back on the same leaderboard again? The upcoming Players Championship does give some positivity but it’s just one of the few. And with guys like Koepka’s contract running out, things could get real interesting soon.
Many fans and pundits attribute that to Koepka’s LIV tenure. Maybe that’s why many are hoping that the big-game player returns to where he rightfully belongs. In his first year at LIV, he appeared at the Masters Tournament finishing T2 behind eventual LIV mate Jon Rahm. He then went on to clinch the PGA Championship the same year with a two stroke lead over Viktor Hovland. Do you think similar to Jon Rahm to LIV, Koepka could make a U-turn to the PGA Tour? Or do you believe that he will continue on the Tour?
