In the world of baseball or beyond, traumatic incidents are bound to show up unannounced. No one at PNC Park for the Cubs-Pirates matchup could have predicted how things were about to take a drastic turn. The Pittsburgh Pirates were in a 4-3 lead against the Chicago Cubs. Little did they know what was coming next. The cheers for their lead abruptly turned into wails as a man suddenly fell from a 21-foot-long Clemente Wall in the right field.
Just as this happened, the players were the first to notice and they quickly signaled the medical team as well as stadium personnel for help. The man was reportedly bleeding and was attended right there for a couple of minutes by the medical team. However, soon he was loaded onto a stretcher and en route to Allegheny General Hospital.
Further, the game continued from the seventh inning after 10 minutes. The Pirates were already in the lead and had their one-run win against the Cubs. Postgame, it was surfaced that the man is in a critical condition. Both teams were in unsettling shock all these days and prayed for the man’s speedy recovery.

The Pirates’ chairman, Bob Nutting, issued a statement to address the unfortunate incident.
The statement read, “We are all deeply saddened and truly heartbroken after the terrible accident that occurred last night. It was one of the most difficult moments any of us have ever experienced. We are devastated.” Further in the statement, Nutting added that for Pirates, fans are more like family. He pleaded for the community to come together and keep the man and his family in their prayers.
Pirates fan, the victim of the horrific incident is identified as Kavan Markwood
In the aftermath of the tragic incident at PNC Park, the man has been identified as Kavan Markwood. He is a 20-year-old former college football player. Just as he fell over the 21-foot-long wall, urgent care was provided by the Pirates, Cubs, and training staff. It took a serious toll on both teams, and the grief was apparent in the clubhouse as well. Derek Shelton, the manager of the Pirates, was visibly affected.
There was a postgame press conference that took place to address all the curiosities and concerns of the media and citizens. During that, Shelton stated, “Even though it’s 350 feet away or whatever it is, the fact of how it went down… laying motionless while the play is going on… it’s extremely unfortunate.” He concluded by saying, “That’s an understatement.” It was certainly difficult to process this incident for all the players, managers, staff, and the 11,297 attendees.
There was an official update from the Pittsburgh Public Safety after the game, and they revealed that this unfortunate incident is being treated as “accidental”. They investigated and revealed that the nature of the tragic accident had no foul play involved.
Immense support is being offered across social media and on all the platforms to Markwood and his family. Meanwhile, the safety concerns are being raised by the Pirates Nation, but the team hasn’t spoken about it yet. Hopefully, it will all settle down soon, and the team will address all the concerns.
