“Breaking news: Canelo Alvarez ducked me… (He) is now an owned slave with no regard for the pride of the Mexican people who support him on US soil.” Anyone remember this? This was from last month when the Problem Child put the biggest active boxer on the planet on blast for leaving him out to dry. Since then, Canelo Alvarez has gone on to sign a lucrative four-fight deal with His Excellency Turki Alalshikh and his Riyadh Season. And what about the man he left behind? Still out looking for a fight that can top his Mike Tyson event last year. Now, more than a month later, Jake Paul and David Benavidez sat down to share their frustration with their common foe-Canelo Alvarez—and their shared inability to get a fight with the Mexican champion. Jabs were thrown, insults flew, and revelations were made.
Last month after the Canelo fight fiasco, David Benavidez set the internet on fire after posting a picture with Jake Paul on his Instagram. The two teased an upcoming podcast episode featuring David Benavidez. Finally, after much anticipation, the episode is out for all. And as expected, the talks revolved around Jake Paul’s negotiation with Canelo Alvarez for a May fight and what led to it tragically falling apart.
All a game of dollars, is it?
Benavidez and Paul started the conversation with Canelo Alvarez and how the fight never materialized. After the WBC interim light heavyweight champion shared his story, the YouTuber-turned-boxer shared his gripe. He revealed how “Basically everything was ready to go one-yard line, signed LOI and confidentiality agreement,” for the fight. It looked like this could be even bigger than the Mike Tyson fight. However, there was a big hurdle in their way in the form of His Excellency Turki Alalshikh.
Breaking news: Canelo Alvarez ducked me Jake Paul and is now an owned slave with no regard for the pride of the Mexican people who support him on US soil. it’s not surprising when his whole career he has done nothing for the sport of boxing outside the ring. “Turki hates me, absolutely hates me,” Jake Paul declared emphatically. The 28-year-old revealed how his team had been negotiating the fight with Canelo Alvarez since November, “the Monday after the Tyson fight. So we were negotiating for two months straight,” he stated. It is common knowledge that the Saudi Royal is not a big fan of Jake Paul and his boxing endeavors, especially those involving ‘real’ boxers. He has criticized El Gallo multiple times, and the latter believes that even during the negotiations, “the whole entire time Turki was doing everything in his power to strip the fight. Try to not make it happen.”
According to the 11-1 boxer, the GEA chairman even threw an ultimatum at Canelo to get him to pull out of the fight. “Calling Canelo, calling Eddie Reynoso, basically saying, ‘Why are you doing this? Why are you doing this?’ to the point where he had to threaten Canelo to pull his three-fight deal: ‘You’re not fighting Crawford. I’m not paying you any of this money.’ And he’s basically paying him over a hundred million dollars for this random a** fight in May. And Canelo at some point is like, ‘Okay you bought me. Like I’m not going to fight this kid Jake’,” Paul revealed to Benavidez. In the end, according to the Cleveland native, it all came down to the money and Canelo chose the marathon over the sprint.
So, why not Jake Paul fight a boxer who is available? Like, say David Benavidez. Since they have a good relationship, and the weight difference is not as massive as him and Canelo, a fight should not be difficult to make, right? Well…
The scariest boxer around
During the conversation, Paul revealed that his manager has lots of potential fights for him. While he is ready for any opponent, there is only one fighter Paul would never face. And that fighter is none other than David Benavidez himself. “My manager is talking about all the potential fights and I am telling him yes and no. And the only no is you. I will not fight this guy. He is a monster bro. I would die. I know my boundaries,” Jake Paul confessed to Jasper on the same podcast.
However, there is one heavyweight that The Problem Child would love to face. “I want to fight Anthony Joshua. Exclusive! Because I know I will beat Anthony Joshua’s a**… I love you Anthony, and we are friends. But I want to fight you,” Jake Paul exclaimed, issuing the challenge.
Will AJ accept the challenge, that is yet to be seen. However, do you think the Canelo Alvarez fight would have been a reality if His Excellency was not involved? Let us know your thoughts down below.
