The New York Giants are staring down one of their most important drafts in years. HC Brian Daboll is all set. After years of questionable moves, they have finally scored a shot at fixing their biggest problem and giving it a fresh start. But what was that one big mistake that kept them away from reaching playoffs since 2022? A former Super Bowl champion pointed that out loud.
On Unsportsmanlike, Chris Canty took his frustration off. The 2011 Super Bowl winner for the Giants called it “the start of all of the problems.” He said how one decision to skip on a quarterback in 2018 spiraled into years of bad choices. “It’s maddening to me. They had the No. 2 overall pick in a draft where five quarterbacks went in the first round,” he said, pointing out the Giants’ blunder. If only the Giants had taken a quarterback in 2018 when they needed one after Eli Manning.

Chris noted that the Giants made a questionable gamble in 2019 by selecting Daniel Jones with the No. 6 overall pick. “They decided to double down on Daniel Jones and pay that guy a long-term contract only to cut him a year and a half later,” Canty pointed out. The Giants gave Jones a four-year, $160 million deal in 2023. But injuries and poor performance quickly made that look like another blunder. The Giants kept making the same mistakes, which hurt their roster and salary cap.
As Chris Canty noted, they had multiple chances to course-correct. “They could have taken a quarterback in 2018. They could have taken a quarterback in 2020,” he emphasized, listing Justin Herbert, Jalen Hurts, and even Jordan Love as missed opportunities. Instead, they stuck with Jones and kept making short-sighted decisions that left them without a long-term answer. Michelle Smallmon said, “They should have had a Packers-like approach,” referring to how the Green Bay Packers consistently draft and develop QBs even before they need them.
Now, the Giants hold the No. 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, hoping to land their franchise quarterback finally. But even that has no guarantee. This year’s draft doesn’t have a sure franchise QB. So the team’s draft positioning might not be as favorable as they wish. This is precisely what Brian Daboll’s concern is.
Brian Daboll stuck with the Giants’ draft dilemma
As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, the New York Giants find themselves in a challenging position. Holding the 3rd-overall pick, they risk missing out on top quarterback prospects. Prospects like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are likely going to get selected by the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns, respectively.
The Tennessee Titans, holding the 1st-overall pick, have shown great interest in Cam Ward. Ward’s impressive performance at Miami’s Pro Day, attended by key Titans personnel, has proven his status as a top contender. Ward himself expressed confidence, stating, “I’m solidifying it today,” indicating his belief that he showcased his readiness for the NFL.

Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns, with the 2nd overall pick, are reportedly considering Shedeur Sanders as their option. They have already added Kenny Pickett as a potential bridge quarterback and are looking forward. Browns analyst Tony Grossi noted, “I’m not ready to say they will pass on him.” So, yes, Sanders is still under consideration.
For the Giants, missing out on Ward and Sanders would be a huge loss. Their current quarterback roster includes Tommy DeVito and Jameis Winston, neither of whom is viewed as a long-term solution. Well, Winston is experienced but has struggled with consistency throughout his career due to injuries.
To put it together, the Giants are in this tough spot, and there is an urgency for the Giants to secure a franchise quarterback to lead the team into the future. This draft could make or break their future.
