How many times have we heard the line that coaches are meant to be our guiding lights? Perhaps many times. But when Jordan Chiles first embraced the sport, she had different experiences. Chiles found herself training under one such coach, Coach X, who is associated with many of her negative memories of gymnastics. P.S.: One time, it got so bad that her mother had to step in and warn her coach!
In her book, “I’m That Girl,“ Jordan Chiles detailed a few incidents when Coach X behaved erratically. The coach once called Chiles’ mom, Gina, drunk, from Portland, and asked for help. Gina instantly got in her car and picked her up from a street festival. That’s when the coach admitted she’d had a drinking problem. This saw Gina giving her a stern reply, “Okay, well are you ready to fix it?… Because the coaching doesn’t even matter at this point. Your life does. You need to get your life together.”
