Gervonta Davis Breaks Silence on Lamont Roach Jr. Rematch After Controversial Knockdown Ending

5 min read

Many of us may not have seen it coming, but Shakur Stevenson called it right from the get-go, predicting the fight to be a “50/50” affair before the final bell even rang. Gervonta Davis himself appeared stunned when the draw was announced. However, in the post-fight press conference, it seemed like Tank had lost some of his fire. The 30-0 record with 28 knockouts had everyone expecting him to finish his opponent before the 12th round. Yet, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn fight night against Lamont Roach Jr. told a different story.

Tank had previously hinted that he might retire by the end of the year after completing three more fights. Though he’s not exactly known for sticking to his word, as his plans seem to change at the drop of a hat, this fight might have served as a reality check. It’s clear now that he’s no longer going to walk away from the sport at the end of the year. Some vehemently argued that referee Steve Willis should have called Tank taking a knee in the 9th round as a knockdown instead of letting it slide, leading to the majority decision draw—certainly a controversial end for Lamont Roach Jr. So, what comes next for Gervonta Davis?

Gervonta Davis teases future plans after surprising draw

A few hours after the fight, the Ring Magazine shared a snippet of the Baltimore native from his post-match press conference. In the exchange, the reporter specifically wanted to know if Gervonta Davis was aiming for a rematch. And if he did, how likely it was to happen within the year. The WBA Lightweight champion, however, wasn’t certain. He responded by saying, “I am not sure, bro. Definitely not sure,” implying that he doesn’t have a clear plan in mind at the moment. He further suggested that a rematch probably won’t happen this year. “Hopefully, we can get it before, um, it probably won’t be this year,” Tank added. This means the 30-year-old already has his next opponent locked in.

The reporter further asked if a rematch was something he wanted. Gervonta Davis confirmed that it’s definitely what he wanted. But then he immediately followed up by saying, “But it’s not gonna be next,” making it clear that while he desired the fight, it wouldn’t be his next move. But the reporter, seemingly curious, didn’t stop there.

He further inquired what exactly would be Gervonta Davis’ next move. And the answer? Davis left it a bit mysterious, teasing, “You might see in a minute.” It might suggest that he already has something in the works but isn’t ready to reveal anything specific, keeping the details under wraps for now. But what about his opponent? Does he want the same?

Lamont Roach Jr. keeps his eye on the prize

The Ring Magazine shared another video where The Reaper revealed his plans for his next opponent. In his post-match press conference, Lamont Roach Jr. responded to a question about Shakur Stevenson. Apparently, the WBC Lightweight Champion approached, immediately after their fight, had a proposition for Roach Jr. Stevenson took to X and wrote, And if Lamont can’t get a rematch I got a big fight for him and a world title shot against me.. that’s my bro but we def can make something happen good sh*t @OneOf1x.”

Roach’s response showed their mutual respect and admiration for each other, as he responded, “That’s why I love him. Genuinely speaking, man,” acknowledging that Shakur’s offer to fight him is something he valued. He also appreciated that Shakur recognized his skills and was willing to offer him a shot at his WBC title.

The Washington native went on to explain that his goal was to fight the best, stating that he wanted to be involved in the biggest and most competitive bouts. He also expressed hope that he could still secure a rematch with Gervonta Davis, although he acknowledged that it might not happen immediately. He admitted that a rematch with Davis might not be in the cards for now, and he hinted that a fight with Shakur Stevenson is more likely to happen next. “Hopefully we could be doing rematch… but more likely it would be with Shakur. Because now we already talked,” the 25-1 revealed.

Lamont Roach Jr. emphasized that the most important thing to him is competition. He wanted to prove that he’s the best, which is why he’s in the game—to face top-tier fighters and show what he’s capable of. He’s confident in his abilities and is determined to rise to the challenge, whether it’s against Gervonta Davis, Shakur Stevenson, or anyone else.

That being said, do you think Gervonta Davis will be ready for a rematch? And if they face off again, who do you see coming out on top? Or do you think a showdown with Shakur Stevenson would be the smartest move for Lamont Roach Jr.?
