Carson Beck created quite the uproar after deciding to—very surprisingly—move base to Miami. This comes after the former Dawgs QB led the team to an SEC championship and a CFP spot in 2024. He moved to the Hurricanes with a giant price tag of $4 million towing behind him. Experts have weighed in on how this plays out for both Georgia HC Kirby Smart and Beck. Some say it was a good riddance, and some say Miami just hit the jackpot. But with the recent drama surrounding the star quarterback, is Miami in the clear?
Beck’s 2024 season was not easy. He had to pull out of the season after an elbow injury he sustained in the SEC championship game. He also performed below the standards he’d set for himself that season. But another concerning fact about Beck is coming to light. He seemed to be a problem not only on the field but in the locker room, too. Apparently, his personal affairs became a huge distraction for his teammates off the field.
In a March 20 video, T-Bob Hebert and Aaron Murray of Snaps discussed a comment made by an NFL GM about Carson Beck’s move being a “red flag.” Hebert quoted the manager saying, “He (Beck) didn’t leave in order to win, play against better competition, or get better coaching. It’s a bad look for him that makes no sense and makes you wonder a lot about a lot.” To this, the host also added that this was Beck “just chasing money and actually taking a step down.” He stressed that this was a demotion in terms of competition, coaching, and the ability to win.
Hebert also added that this made it seem like “Georgia fans and the staff was done with Carson Beck.” Murray agreed to this instantaneously, saying, “I think everyone was done with Carson.” “If you go into that locker room and ask players and coaching how they viewed Carson last year, you’d have a difficult time finding a lot of positive, unfortunately. It kind of felt like he was siloed off from the rest of team.”
Murray also pointed out that Beck was very much engaged in his recent relationship with Hanna Cavinder and that these sentiments came to light after he got hurt. “I think there was a rift within the locker room, where it was just time for him to move on.”
Murray stressed that the culture in the locker room at Georgia is one of great value. “If you can’t handle that, especially as a quarterback, and you’re either asked to leave or leave (voluntarily), I think that’s a big red flag for NFL scouts,” he said. Georgia’s Jared Wilson and Arian Smith also shared how Beck and Gunner Stockton brought different energies to the locker room.
Carson Beck’s distractions can impact his NFL hopes
Miami struck gold after getting Beck into the roster, hoping he would bring some of that Georgia brilliance here. With a $4 million NIL deal and an extremely publicized relationship, Mario Cristobal was also getting a VIP-level celebrity in Beck. With him onboard, discussions about Beck are going to involve a lot more than just the football he brings forward.
Murray said, “How many other quarterbacks this year have talked about, to the extent that we’ve talked about Carson Beck, when it comes to off the field?” He then brings to light the frenzy behind his transfer, the money, Beck’s relationship (and the alleged end of it), and how NFL GMs will not be able to ignore all of this. Murray says, “I guarantee you, half the GMs are saying, ‘We don’t want that from our starting quarterback.’” With Miami being Beck’s last year at sealing a dream NFL spot next year, he has to work on dealing with all these “distractions.”
Beck will be a hit-or-miss deal for Miami. His public life has grown way too large for the stature of a college football player. This doesn’t necessarily bode trouble for star college football players. But it might do so for Beck because of the way he dealt with it in Georgia. A quarterback cannot bring that kind of attachment to the locker room, where it will impact the whole team. How Beck and Miami fare in their new era will be an interesting narrative to follow this season.
