Garrett Nussmeier’s Brother Gets Massive Recruiting Boost as LSU, Alabama and 20 College Football Programs Show Interest

5 min read

When it comes to quarterback bloodlines, the Nussmeier name carries some serious weight. It starts with Doug Nussmeier, who set an Idaho state record with 10,824 passing yards back in the day—a mark that still hasn’t been touched. His son, Garrett Nussmeier, picked up that torch and lit up Baton Rouge, tallying 5,763 yards and 40 touchdowns over four seasons at LSU. Now poised for a massive fifth year, Garrett is eyeing a Heisman run and the school’s all-time passing crown in 2025. But here’s where it gets juicier—there’s another Nussmeier coming down the pipeline, and college football programs are already lining up.

Meet Colton Nussmeier, Garrett’s younger brother and the next chapter in this quarterback family dynasty. Still just a sophomore at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas, Colton is already turning heads across the nation. He’s 6’3″, 185 pounds, and slinging darts like he was born to do this—which, let’s face it, he kinda was. Colton just landed at No. 2 on the 2027 Texas QB rankings, right behind Kavian Bryant and ahead of names like Brice McCurdy, Weston Nielson, and Carson White.

And this isn’t just hype. As a sophomore, Colton put up 1,939 passing yards with a sharp 16–3 TD-to-INT ratio, completing 60% of his passes. He even threw for four touchdowns and just one interception as a freshman in limited varsity action. On top of that? He added a couple of rushing scores for good measure. This one is efficient—and most importantly, he’s just getting started.

So naturally, the big question pops up: Is LSU in his future, too?

Right now, the Tigers are preparing for life after Garrett Nussmeier by grooming Mississippi State transfer Michael Van Buren, who has multiple years of eligibility left. If Colton follows Garrett to Baton Rouge, he could develop behind Van Buren for a year or two, just like Garrett Nussmeier did behind Jayden Daniels. It’s a familiar setup that makes sense for the Nussmeier DNA.

And Colton already has ties with the Tigers. “I think my relationship is pretty good with LSU mainly because of my brother and how many times I have been there to see him,” he said. “I think I have a pretty good connection with the staff.” But hold up—it’s not just LSU….

Twenty-Plus schools are eyeing Garrett Nussmeier’s lil bro

Colton Nussmeier is being courted hard by a laundry list of powerhouse programs. As of now, he holds 22 scholarship offers. That includes Florida, who made waves by offering Colton on April 25. He posted a four-photo highlight reel on X featuring the Gators’ stadium and players, writing: “All Glory to God!! Thankful to have received an offer from The University of Florida.” He even flexed the offer on his Instagram story, letting the world know that his stock is only going up.

That’s right—LSU’s longtime SEC nemesis just jumped in the ring. And they’re not the only ones. Alabama, too, is keeping tabs on the younger Nussmeier, and they’ve got history.

Colton grew up in Tuscaloosa, watching his dad coach quarterbacks for the Crimson Tide and helping lead them to a national title in 2012. “Just really how much hard work they put into it, and how they want to see each other succeed,” Colton said. “Just the family of it all.” That experience shaped how he views the game and how he approaches it.

“I think I can read defenses pretty well and be able to extend plays, make plays with my legs,” Colton explained. “I have a strong arm and can put it wherever I want to at any time.”

Alabama OC Nick Sheridan saw it too. Sheridan first reached out about a year ago—back when Colton had only one varsity start under his belt. Fast forward to this spring, and after studying his full season tape, the Tide pulled the trigger. “They watched my tape and studied me and saw what kind of player I am,” Colton said. “I guess, now they just wanted to pull the trigger.” And when that ‘Bama offer landed? “It felt awesome,” Colton said. “Big program that takes (football) very seriously and wants to win.”

Colton’s recruiting journey is sprinting, not strolling. NCAA rules may limit direct contact with 2027 prospects, but he’s already itching to get back to Tuscaloosa for a spring practice. Not exactly music to LSU’s ears.

But there’s one man staying right down the middle: Doug Nussmeier. Despite the deep LSU ties and his past with Alabama, he’s letting his sons find their own path. “He wanted whatever is best for my brother,” Colton said. “He wants the same for me, and he wants us to pick the best school that fits us.”

For now, LSU hasn’t locked down a 2026 quarterback commit. If that trend continues, the staff will be looking straight at the 2027 class—and Colton’s name will shoot to the top of that list. Especially if LSU misses out on guys like Elijah Haven. In that scenario, Colton becomes the guy to chase.

With 24 offers, a clean release, and a football IQ way beyond his years, Colton Nussmeier is officially on every major program’s radar. He’s not just Garrett Nussmeier’s little brother anymore—he’s writing his own script. Now the only question left is… will he keep the Nussmeier legacy rolling through Baton Rouge, or will he carve out his own legacy in enemy territory?
