The picture-perfect parent we admire today has walked through fire to hold her miracle in her arms. Gabrielle Union’s journey to motherhood was paved with heartbreak, resilience, and an unwavering love that refused to surrender. After years of crushing miscarriages, grueling IVF cycles, and the relentless pain of adenomyosis, she faced a crossroads: continue risking her health or embrace surrogacy. But with Dwayne Wade’s support, she was able to make the tough call.
They sought out the most ethical agency they could find, one that honored the humanity of surrogates. Within months, they were connected with Natalie, a woman whose warmth and sincerity cut through Union’s skepticism. In 2018, their surrogate, Natalie, carried their hope to term, and after 38 harrowing hours of labor, Kaavia James arrived, screaming, perfect, and worth every tear. However, in a recent interview, Gabrielle shared the lingering impact that still exists.
On being asked, “Have you made peace with it?” She responded: “No. I’ll never have peace with it, ever. And that’s not a what-anybody-has-to-say thing; that’s just my yearning has never dissipated.” She continued to share: “I was so ready for my surprise, but all the prayers that didn’t get answered in the way that I thought made me more conscientious that my child is here.” Her struggles with acceptance towards surrogacy also stem from her past marriage struggles involving infidelity.
In a 2021 interview, Gabrielle accepted that “To say I was devastated is to pick a word on a low shelf for convenience. The experience of Dwyane having a baby so easily while I was unable to left my soul not just broken into pieces, but shattered into fine dust scattering in the wind.” Union said she chose to “love him and forgive him” after Wade “worked to be forgiven” each day.
And although she admitted that “The advice I would give myself now is to leave, the me of today would not have stayed with him, but would I be who I am now without that pain?” Despite the dark past, their family is flourishing now, and Gabrielle is the force behind it. Her active parenting defies all odds of the breaking of Wade-Union clan.
