Gabby Thomas might have to pause her wedding plans momentarily after GST Miami. And while she liked the prospect of utilizing a part of her GST winnings for marriage back in Jamaica, her recent race in Miami left a lot to be desired. But why? After all, she won in Miami. Well, while the Olympian was indeed on the podium in Magic City, a small miscalculation on her part had her missing out on the $100K prize money. But the US track and field star is not ready to give up without a fight!
After winning the 200m in Jamaica, Thomas wanted to remain in first position. This would help her reach her goal of earning $100k from each Grand Slam Track appearance. Thankfully, Thomas already bagged the hefty cash prize back in Kingston. But in a bid to repeat the same in Miami, Thomas faltered. Participating in the short sprint (200m), Thomas dropped a timing of 21.95s to win the race.
However, this was not enough for Thomas to clinch the number one rank. She finished second overall with 17 points (4th in 100m and 1st in 200m). Thus, she was only eligible for a cash prize of $50k. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden took the first rank with 18 points(1st in 100m & 3rd in 200m). But Gabby Thomas is not at all taking the loss lightly. Catching up with CITIUS MAG after her race, Thomas stated how she almost made a mess.
Getting herself in a precarious situation, the Olympic gold medalist did well to come back and recover just in time. But she will be back with vengeance, and Thomas did not hide her feelings while spilling the secrets of her plans. “I don’t take losing lightly, so there’s some added motivation, and sometimes you just need that,” said Thomas. She also stressed the fact that she has to come back from the low to hit her highs.
“I think I’m just a competitor. I think we all are fierce competitors, and we all want to win. My work ethic, I think, is second to none, so that shows and it showed in the last slam and it’ll show in the next few,” echoed a gritty Thomas. And although she could not get her desired result, Thoms was not very happy.
The Olympian reiterated how she had been able to get herself towards victory after a tough run the day before. Meanwhile, as Thomas would like to further enhance herself, back in Jamaica, she was stunned to see the pace at which the 400m event unfolded.
Gabby Thomas left stunned by 400m pace at GST Jamaica
Gabby Thomas knew she was stepping into a challenge in Kingston, but nothing prepared her for just how intense the 400-meter race at Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track event would be. Fresh off a commanding win in the 200m, Thomas lined up again with confidence. Still, she found herself racing against the clock in ways she hadn’t anticipated. “I didn’t think it would be quite fast this early,” she admitted, surprised by the searing pace of the race.
Top athletes stacked the field, expectations soared, and the tempo pushed relentlessly forward. Gabby dug deep to keep pace and ultimately crossed the line as runner-up behind Salwa Eid Nasser, who delivered a world-leading 48.67 seconds. “It does hurt; it takes a lot of grit and mental effort to win that race,” Thomas confessed, reflecting on the physical and emotional demands of the lap-long sprint.
Despite finishing second, Thomas walked away proudly. Not just of her performance, but of having held her own in one of the season’s fastest races so far. Gabby added, “Everyone ran amazingly, and I’m proud of what I did.” Even Michael Johnson, the legend behind the event, offered her praise—a gesture that capped off a night that was as humbling as it was electrifying.
