The San Antonio Spurs have been missing their guiding hand this season. Gregg Popovich has vast experience in developing young players to become the best players in the league. Sadly, though, the renowned Spurs coach suffered a mild stroke in November. Since then, everybody has wondered when they will see Pop back on the sidelines screaming and fighting for his team. Until now, he hasn’t made an appearance.
But Warriors coach Steve Kerr had to check up. Before the Warriors and the Spurs played tonight, Kerr visited Gregg Popovich. The Warriors HC had a positive update about his health. “He looks great doing great,” the nine-time champion said about Pop. The iconic Spurs leader has been a major influence on so many players over his long coaching career.
But most importantly, his success has willed on NBA coaches. “He’s one of the most important people in my life. So hoping that everything continues to progress and, you know, but it was wonderful to see him,” Steve Kerr said about him.

The Warriors head coach is one of the few people to know both sides of Popovich. For three seasons, the former sharpshooter spent time as a player for Gregg Popovich’s Spurs. Later on, as he gravitated to coaching, they spent some memorable. For four years, Kerr was one of the assistants to Pop for Team USA. Additionally, they also coached together in the 2017 NBA All-Star game.
Likewise, Steve Kerr has built a meaningful connection with the most successful coach in NBA history. And like the NBA fanbase, he wishes Popovich a speedy recovery.
All hopes are with Gregg Popovich
Without Gregg Popovich, the Spurs have been stumbling this season. The influential head coach, though, has been springing when it comes to his recovery. In a previous update, a report suggested Coach Pop has advanced greatly in his recovery. However, one thing is for sure. He isn’t going to return this season.
And without him, Kerr sees how the young yet enthralling side is feeling a little unstable.
“That’s a huge loss. You know, I think their coaching staff with Mitch, they’re doing a great job and they have stayed competitive. Tonight was a, you know, a one-off. This was not indicative of how they’ve been playing,” Kerr mentioned after their 148-106 loss to the Warriors. And frankly, Mitch Johnson has been steady.
Having spent years besides Pop, he can simulate his lessons and ideologies to the players. Johnson also seems to have a strong command of the players. But Pop’s radiating presence brings another degree of confidence for the Spurs. He’s won them five championships, stayed active for the longest, and has great mentoring qualities.
For a young team that is looking to transition into becoming a winning team, a strong voice like his helps eliminate any foul habits on the basketball court. Pop knows how to carry a team to becoming great. And as Steve Kerr confirms he looks healthy, Spurs fans will hope they can have his wisdom at some point next season.
