Fresh Aces Intel Reveal Troubling A’ja Wilson Update 8 Hours Before Washington Game

5 min read

Injuries have cut down on this WNBA season’s star power drastically, and Cathy Engelbert seems helpless to stop it. A part of it is because of workload, having to play overseas basketball alongside the regular season in order to make a living, and some of it you just can’t avoid. A’ja Wilson’s most recent injury is a prime example of how sometimes things just happen. The Las Vegas Aces star, and Team Clark’s latest addition for the ASW, is currently struggling with a wrist injury.

She suffered a pretty bad fall during Tuesday’s game against the New York Liberty, and her right wrist took the brunt of the impact. The reigning MVP went in for an MRI on Wednesday and was ruled ‘questionable’ for today’s game against the Washington Mystics. And the latest news has Aces fans worried beyond measure.

As per Washington Post reporter Kareem Copeland, A’ja Wilson was seen wearing a brace on her right wrist during the pre-game shootaround. She still participated in the practice according to @UnderdogWNBA, but things aren’t looking amazing for the Las Vegas Aces center, who had to sit out the entire second half against New York.

Luckily, Wilson has a lot of support from the Aces coaching staff, and especially Becky Hammon. “She absolutely does not want to sit out or go out of the game, but then there’s a reality of physicality that happens out there.” The Aces HC said on Tuesday. “Big picture? Our season is bigger than just this one game, so we want to make sure she’s not putting herself at any risk of injuring anything or damaging anything.”

Depending on her injury status, A’ja Wilson’s team might lose out on a whopping 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists a game, and the presence of the MVP on the court. Not to mention, it also raises the question of whether Wilson will be fit for the All-Star game coming up. Fans are dying to see her playing alongside Caitlin Clark, and this injury might get in the way of that star-studded union. But what’s the latest update on Wilson’s status for tonight? Let’s find out!

A’ja Wilson’s absence raises important questions for Becky Hammon and Caitlin Clark

Las Vegas fans, your worst nightmares are coming to life! In a grim, yet expected, update from @UnderdogWNBA on X, A’ja Wilson has been ruled out of Thursday’s clash against the Washington Mystics. The game was supposed to be evenly matched, but with Wilson’s unfortunate status, Kiki Iriafen and her Mystics have a clear shot at winning.

But what does A’ja Wilson’s injury mean for her team at large? Well, the Las Vegas Aces are currently 9-10 for the season, dropping down to the lower tiers of the Western Conference. They were banking on Wilson’s exceptional performances to make a mid-season push towards the playoffs. But when the, “A’ja Wilson (wrist) ruled out Thursday,” message dropped, it suddenly became a lot more difficult for the Aces.

Becky Hammon’s team will need to hold the fort down for the next couple of games. After Washington, they have the super-confident Golden State Valkyries on the list, who just defeated the Indiana powerhouse last night. Considering that we’re unsure about A’ja Wilson’s timeline to recovery, the Aces will need to prepare for the worst. Their backcourt, and their scoring, is not an issue considering Jackie Young’s recent run, but this will be a trial by fire for Hammon’s frontcourt depth.

Not to mention, this injury might spell disaster for first-time All-Star Captain Caitlin Clark who drafted the WNBA MVP a couple of days ago. “Two of my starters are injured at the moment, but I’m praying they heal up for the game or else we might have a little bit of trouble.” Clark had said yesterday, referring to Wilson and Sabally, but A’ja’s wrist might throw her availability into question.

If that’s the case, both Las Vegas and Team Clark will need to figure out how to play without the MVP. And that’s a lot easier said than done. A’ja Wilson impacts the game in ways that simply cannot be replaced or exchanged, and fans will be hoping to see the MVP back in action as soon as possible. Stay tuned for more updates.
