In the grand tradition of athletes willing to lay it all on the line, one Dodgers superstar was ready to make the ultimate sacrifice—only to be overruled by those with, let’s say, a better sense of timing. Enter Freddie Freeman, a man so committed to the cause that he practically had to be restrained from suiting up in Tokyo.
Freeman is the one player that can try and do such a thing. He wants to push his body to the limit but the team didn’t allow it to happen. When asked about it, Dave Roberts said, “He lobbied hard, like he always does. He wants to play every day. He kind of prepared to play, but ultimately conceded to myself and the training staff.”
Freeman was eager to play but the team decided to look at this from a long-term perspective. They would like to have him from the early season, true! But rather than having him at 90% right now, they would want to have him at 100% in October.
And so, the Dodgers did what all great teams must—save their stars from themselves.
Freeman may have been willing to storm the field like a warrior, but October glory isn’t won in March. The real battle lies ahead, and when the stakes are highest, the Dodgers will need their MVP at his fullest, not just willing—but unstoppable.
