The Toronto Blue Jays swung big for Pete Alonso. They missed. And now, a former New York Mets player has taken the opportunity to twist the knife. The Blue Jays, desperate for a power bat after a lackluster offensive showing in 2024, believed Alonso could anchor their lineup. And so, multiple reports confirm that Toronto presented Alonso with the most lucrative offer—larger than what the Mets ultimately structured to keep their star first baseman. Still, the Polar Bear chose familiarity and comfort in New York.
This failure is particularly painful for Toronto, given their string of missed opportunities. They were outbid for Shohei Ohtani, lost Juan Soto, and despite being one of the most aggressive suitors for Alonso, came up empty. Though the five-year deal with Anthony Santander provides some offensive help, he might not have the same game-changing impact.
Alonso’s loyalty to the Mets prevails
As news of Alonso’s return to the Mets spread, an ex-MLB third baseman, Todd Frazier, took it to mock the Blue Jays. In a recent Foul Territory video, he implied that Toronto never stood a real chance, suggesting Alonso’s heart was always in New York. “If I’m the Blue Jays sitting there thinking, I could have got this guy for 2 years, 54 million, oh my god, they could have easily done a lot more than that and still been fine with it… I think that’s Pete, he didn’t want to leave. I think he’s comfortable there.”
Now, the Blue Jays must shift gears. Securing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with a long-term extension remains a priority. And his impending free agency in 2025 makes securing his future imperative. If the team falters in acquiring another hitter they may shift their attention towards strengthening their pitching lineup or aiming for offensive improvements instead.
Meanwhile, the Mets have reinforced their position as a National League powerhouse. With Alonso re-signed and Juan Soto in the mix, New York boasts one of the most dangerous lineups. Steve Cohen’s aggressive approach continues to pay off, leaving teams like the Blue Jays wondering what more they could have done.
What other options do the Blue Jays have?
The Blue Jays are currently at a crossroads – whether to pursue another player aggressively or concentrate on addressing internal team needs. Alex Bregman stands out as one of the best hitters remaining in the market and Toronto has been rumored to be a potential spot for quite some time now. Breggy’s impressive blend of power at bat and disciplined approach along with postseason experience could effectively address the gap.
Nevertheless, considering competition from teams vying for his signature, the Blue Jays need to carefully weigh their options. Other potential choices include J.D Martinez, who could boost the team with his as a designated hitter despite his defensive limitations. Adding Martinez’s hitting skills would greatly benefit a team that requires scoring output.
So, given the dwindling choices in the market now Toronto needs to make quick moves before the season begins. The pressure is mounting. With few elite options left, they must pivot quickly—either by pursuing Alex Bregman or locking up Vladimir Guerrero Jr. long-term.
