Fans Relive “Malice in the Palace” as Pistons-Wolves Brawl Revives Old Wounds & Nostalgia

4 min read

A recent altercation between the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves echoed a notorious past incident. Yes. To the keen ones reading, it was reminiscent of the fight in 2004. Between the Indiana Pacers and guess who? The Detroit Pistons, again. The war of attrition began with a squabble between Ron Artest and Ben Wallace. That soon turned into full-blown mayhem, with fans getting involved in the action, too.

The 2025 incident, however, occurred with 8:36 left on the clock. The Pistons’ Ron Holland conceded a foul on the Timberwolves’ Naz Reid as he attempted a layup. Reid reacted adversely and had choice words for Holland and pointed towards his face. The bust-up quickly escalated, and Reid’s teammate Donte Vincenzo stepped in and put his hands on Holland’s chest. The two then shoved each other.

The altercation reached the second row of the stands when Isaiah Stewart tackled DiVincenzo, ending up on top of him. Coaches, staff, and players like Rudy Gobert tried to pull apart the brawl. @complex and @complexsports took to Instagram to report the news. They shared a post with footage of the brawl. They captioned the post, “T-Wolves fans were about to get active Things got heated between the Pistons and the Timberwolves, with Donte DiVincenzo, Naz Reid, Ron Holland, Isaiah Stewart, Marcus Sasser, Pistons HC J.B. Bickerstaff, and Wolves assistant coach Pablo Prigioni all being ejected.”  commenting on the crazy scenes that followed!

The fans were definitely aghast and excited at the same time. The drama that unfolded between these teams instantly captured the attention of fans, who flocked to social media to weigh in.

How the fans reacted to the Pistons-Timberwolves brawl

The fans had a field day on social media, with varied reactions. One fan commented, “ Malice in the palace again ” referring to the legendary fight between the Pacers and   Timberwolves, where even the fans got involved in the brawl. Another fan commented, “ Pistons always good for one of these every 10 years,” referring to the fight and the unprecedented entertainment they bring to the table.

Some fans bundled on nostalgia, with an Instagram user commenting, “Pistons fight spilling into the crowd. 00s basketball fans having flashbacks right now taking a trip down memory lane and recounting the instance of the infamous brawl. A fan also commented, “Pistons just like we remembered them” giving a subtle nod to all the fiery battles that took place. Another fan commented, “Malice in the palace part 2 lmaoooobringing that chaotic energy within the comment section.

Some fans decided to bring humor to the situation as well. One hilarious fan commented, “Again, never seen a Stewart highlight with the ball in frame,” poking fun at how the player was quick to jump in on the action but was absent from the radar during the game. Another fan commented, “Isaiah stewert needs anger management classes” The 23-year-old took the fight to the stands, literally. You could see both him and DeVincenzo emerging haggardly out of the mess on the second row of the stands.

Many believe this to be the grittiness the Pistons have been historically known for. And at the heart of it is Isaiah Stewart.

Finally, one fan gave the most real response. They commented, “ man yeah them front rows cool and all til they fall on you.” One minute you’re booing the opponent, and the next, a 6-foot-8 Stewart lands on top of you. Not the best day out.

The fans enjoyed the spectacle of the altercation. However, the long-term consequences for the players involved, especially in terms of potential suspensions, will likely have a bigger impact. While this incident may not rival the chaos of ‘Malice at the Palace,’ it is a reminder of the passion that defines the Pistons. But are these moments a throwback to a bygone era? Or a sign of things to come in the modern NBA?
