Eye Injury Forces Henry Cejudo to Lay Out One Condition for UFC Retirement Fight

4 min read

Carrying probably one of the best resumes ever, Henry Cejudo once stood atop of the UFC’s flyweight and bantamweight divisions, holding championships of both divisions simultaneously, and even defended both titles. ‘Triple C’s journey began in the Olympics, where he won the gold medal in 2008, at just 21. After that, he went on a spectacular journey in MMA and had some unbelievable moments. From beating veterans like Marlon Moraes and Dominick Cruz, Cejudo’s biggest MMA win came when he shocked the world and defeated one of the greatest of all time, Demetrious Johnson, to win the flyweight title.

While talking about his possible return and future in the Octagon, Henry told Helen Yee: “This is my last one. I want to leave this sport unscathed. The first time at the age of 33, I did it right,  retired young. I got one more in me, make some money, then that’s it. I’m out.”, revealing he has not more than one fight left in him and is considering retirement following his eye injury that he is still healing from. An illustrious career, to say the least; it’s understandable for Cejudo to choose safety over risk and avoid a long-term injury in search of.

While there haven’t been many updates regarding his eye injury, Henry Cejudo talked to The Schmo about the injury, revealing: “It’s probably about maybe about 90%. I got my eye doctors right here with me so we became friends through that. His name’s uh Dr. Jay Aurora but I still see double. He said it should probably take about another month to where I’m 100%.

On being asked whether he had a chance to train after the double eye-poke incident at UFC Fight Night 252, ‘Triple C’ said, “I have been [training]. I have been—so I’m able to do that. I’m able to see straight now rather than seeing double so.” His eyesight is getting better, but there’s no way he’s getting back in there without recovering 100%. But then again, time isn’t on his side with regards to where he is in his MMA career.

So who does Henry Cejudo want in his last fight, once his eye gets better? Well, there are plenty of names in the bantamweight division. But ‘Triple C’ has one name in mind—to right the wrong he encountered in his last Octagon appearance. But who is this opponent, and how likely is he to get this name as his last opponent? Let’s find out.

Henry Cejudo wants Yadong for final fight, thinks Dana White may not grant him final wish

Henry’s retirement stint in 2020 left Dana White quite disappointed. The UFC President and CEO Dana White was left absolutely bitter after Henry Cejudo announced his retirement out of nowhere, following his successful defense of the UFC bantamweight title at UFC 249 against Dominick Cruz. In what was a huge surprise for the whole MMA community, Dana White felt Henry’s retirement was a huge waste of his potential. Following his loss to Dvalishvili at UFC 298, Dana White said: “In my opinion, you can’t take three years off in combat sports, It’s never done well for anybody.

Cejudo finds himself in a similar situation to that of 2020, with that in mind, we can’t forget what kind of toll a three fight losing streak has on him. Cejudo remains vocal about the Yadong rematch for his final bout, however, he believes Dana White is still upset over his last retirement, He told The Schmo, “Probably not bro, I think Dana is still pissed at me because I retired in 2020. I don’t think in his eyes, he’d probably give that to me. I think he probably thinks I bitched out but if I could get anybody, that’s that’s who I would want and just that’s it“.

Whether or not Henry Cejudo gets the Song Yadong rematch, he has established himself as one of the most successful athletes of all time. From his memorable crowning moments to proving his doubters wrong with each step forward, Cejudo was the fighter who brought a new intensity and variety in the Flyweight/Bantamweight division of UFC. With his eye being a permanent risk factor, Cejudo is barely looking for anything more than a payout, one which he deserved then, but now with a three fight-losing streak does not seem so possible. What do you think the future will hold for the Triple Champ Henry Cejudo? Let us know in the comments.
